Teenagers

Parenting teenagers has its ups and downs. Get advice from Mumsnetters here.

Most young people/teenagers seem to take off their shoes without untying the bow. Do you see that as well and why do they do that?

I do it. Just because it saves time I guess, I usually slip them back on without untying and retying them too.

Herja · 08/04/2021 17:41

I do this. I'm lazy. So lazy that I'd rather not undo them now, than save future me the hassle of doing it too put them back on again. Where possible, the laces just stay done up for ever.

thesparkthatbled · 08/04/2021 17:43

I do this, haven't tied up a pair of trainers for about 20 years. Who could be arsed with fannying around tying up laces every time?

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 08/04/2021 18:07

I do it, my teenagers just don't bother tying the laces at all

ChubbyMsSunshine · 08/04/2021 18:31

I do this and I'm not a young person. I've been doing it since I was one though!

As to why....I'm lazy?

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 08/04/2021 18:32

I'm 44 and do this......sorry Mum!

MyGoMargot · 08/04/2021 18:33

I do this. I wish I was a young person

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 08/04/2021 18:33

I'm 49 and still not untying my shoelaces. Can't be arsed.

Divineswirls · 08/04/2021 18:33

I'm 50 and I've always done this

GravityFalls · 08/04/2021 18:36

Shoes - even trainers - used to be made out of quite stiff leather. You had to really break the back down and ruin them to be able to slip them on and off. Modern shoes are made out of much more flexible fabrics - even my kids’ leather school shoes have padding around the ankle, flexible soles etc - so you can slip them on and off without bending the shoe out of shape. So why wouldn’t you, I suppose?

takingmytimeonmyride · 08/04/2021 18:38

I do this too. I am very young, 45.

PolarnOPirate · 08/04/2021 18:39

I do it too. Laziness, but it's annoying because I have to undo them to get them on. Either way it's a pain, I'm usually in a rush to sort the kids/get their shoes off etc so just ski the undoing part, but then of course I have to get them on again later.

FinallyHere · 08/04/2021 18:41

My shoes now have elasticised laces so that I can slip my feet in and out.

WorraLiberty · 08/04/2021 18:41

That's a seriously strange question OP.

What possible reasons have you come up with so far?

I mean reasons that aren't the completely obvious one.

Lordamighty · 08/04/2021 18:45

I do this, I’m not young, it’s more comfortable to have the laces loose enough to make it easy to slip the shoes on & off.

ILoveRossGeller · 08/04/2021 20:25

When I was in school it was SO uncool to tie laces, you had to just tuck them inside your trainers. It was practically the law!

BlowDryRat · 08/04/2021 20:28

I do it, usually for reasons of laziness but also because it's hard to get the right tension on my running shoes so I don't like to interfere with them once they're tightened comfortably.

JustDanceAddict · 10/04/2021 18:35

I do it too at nearly 50 😆

IReallyNeedMoreGin · 10/04/2021 18:38

I've always done this and I'm mid 40's!

prettyLittlefool · 10/04/2021 18:39

Precursor to slip on shoes.

ColourfulElmerElephant · 10/04/2021 18:41

Surely most people do this; it’s not just a young person thing.
