Hates it apparently and found a course they really want do at another local college this Sept. Do I let them drop out or make them continue and finish this year? Are they allowed to drop out and work ?

Confused

Yes they can leave. The (England only) rule of 'education and training' until 18 isn't inforced. They only thing that will happen is if you receive Child Benefit for them it will stop and they will not be entitled to claim any benefits for themselves. So you will have to financially support them if they don't get a job.

Would we lose the child element of UC?

I don't know about UC I am afraid but possibly.

I think you would, although I'm not certain.

Could they finish the course on condition they they get a job and pay board?

Will they still get funding for a course if the change as under 18?

I am no expert but my son dropped out of college twice before he was 18. If he registers with the careers advice service and attends appointments you will still get child benefit. My son was offered a short course through the Prince's Trust which I think paid him £30 per week. This helped him get a job. Unfortunately he was made redundant due to the pandemic, but he was able to claim UC on his own account age 17 . Hope that helps you.

Thanks, just wonder if it is wrong to agree to them changing course and make them stick it out for the second year , or switch in Sept and hope they dont want to swtich again?

My daughter dropped out before 18 and got a job. You'll lose any CB and TC/UC you get for them. I had a knock on the door from the educational welfare, and then she got a letter telling her she must stay in education or training. Both were ignored with no repercussions.

My son dropped out of sixth form in January as he hated it. I tried to get him to stay until September when he can go to college but he was so unhappy. He’s tried looking for a job until then but as yet no luck. My thoughts are if he has to take a few months off then that’s fine as long as he knows he has to go back in September
