If your children/tweens were in the top percentile across their childhood what age did they start puberty?

I’m watching my (huge) eight year old at the moment who seems to be growing in front of my eyes and wondering if they’ll hit puberty before secondary school. They have tracked the 96th percentile since they were one and over Christmas we took height and weight and we’re just over the 97th percentile for both.

Is there any correlation between these stats and puberty being earlier? Or are the two completely separate?

My always high percentile eldest (off the chart during infancy as a breastfed baby!) has had the same puberty timing as me although I was a much more slender child.

thirstyformore · 04/01/2021 12:54

Both my children were top percentile born and have tracked the top percentile so far. (DS was a huge baby/toddler - was above the top percentile!!). DS is too young to tell at the moment, but DD is nearly 12. In size 10 clothes, size 7 feet, 5 ft 6 tall but not started her periods yet.

I started at 10 so I am quite surprised at this.

So for our family, there's no correlation so far.....

Mablefly · 04/01/2021 12:56

No correlation here either. 99th centile throughout and periods started at 13, slightly later than many of her shorter friends.

Notashandyta · 04/01/2021 13:00

I'm 5.10" and started my period at just turned 13 so not early, if that helps! Our kids too young to tell...

justanotherneighinparadise · 04/01/2021 13:03

It’s fascinating watching them grow. We do talk about puberty already and they’re excited for it to happen eventually. So I’m not worried about them being scared or anything. I’m just surprised at how crazy big his feet are and what size clothes I’m now buying. It’s as though I’m already dealing with a teenager!

DS1 is small and has always been on the 25th percentile but hit puberty way before some of his taller friends. DS2 is much taller and was always on the 75th percentile and hit puberty at about the same age as Ds1 was.

JustDanceAddict · 04/01/2021 13:20

In height, DS was around the 90th, but he hit puberty at an average age (12.5 his voice started to deepen and his main growth spurt was between 13-14). He’s still not got a full beard at 16.5, but he’s over 6ft3. He overtook all the boys height-wise who started puberty earlier.

JustDanceAddict · 04/01/2021 13:22

DD was taller than average too but periods started just turned 13, slightly later than friends, but she is slim.

My son’s already in size 3 shoes and is only just 8. Dare I ask what size your son is in?

It depends whether you/his dad are also on those high centiles for height. If not then he may well go through puberty earlier than some.

I was a late bloomer. One of the last in my class to get boobs/period at around 14. Don’t know about DP. We’re both pretty tall with some very tall people on both sides of the family.

My 11 year old (Birthday is June) has always been on the 98th percentile. As a baby and toddler, he always looked older than what he actually was.

Now at age 11, He is already 5’8 tall with size 11 feet. He wears men’s Medium size clothes and his voice changed at the beginning of the year. He seems to have started so early but it doesn’t seem to bother him.

I’m most worried about the size of his feet and hope they stop growing.

His Dad is about 5’9 and I’m 5’10 so he probably takes after me.

Beamur · 04/01/2021 13:37

DD was always very high on centiles. First period age 11, still at primary school (just).
Two years younger than me.

Woah! That sounds expensive 😬

@justanotherneighinparadise Haha, it’s not too bad at the moment as he couldn’t be less interested in clothes so not into labels or anything yet. I can still get away with Primarni.
Plus, my older son who is 20 and very much into clothes passes everything on as they wear the same size 😳 It’s crazy but we are quite lucky I that respect.

I do hope he stops growing soon though as my cousin was 6’5 and very big built used to have a lot of trouble whilst out with friends as a young adult. Men would purposely start fights with him because of his size.
My son is the softest person ever and I hate the thought of him having that kind of hassle.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 04/01/2021 13:56

DD has always been off the chart in terms of height, a couple of centiles lower for weight. Started puberty this year age 10/11, grown about 8 inches since the start of lockdown in March, size 7 feet, about 160cm tall, adult 10 in trousers and 8 in tops.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 04/01/2021 13:59

Clothes can be an issue, buying things that are age appropriate in grown up sizes and tops don't sit quite right, due to lockdown and being home alot Dd pretty much lives in Hollister tracksuit in an adult S.

justanotherneighinparadise · 04/01/2021 14:01

Gosh, that crazy @HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime!! I guess I’m just going to have to wait and see and brace myself for the cost of massive clothes and shoes 🙈

OP posts:
HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 04/01/2021 14:05

I don't mind as now we are the same shoe size so when she grows out of them I can have them Grin Unfortunately I don't think I'll ever get down to an 8 so doubt we'll be sharing clothes anytime soon.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 04/01/2021 14:07

All of the women on my dads side are 6 ft plus so I guess she's got the height from there and will overtake my measly 5ft6 in a few months.

The bonus is I have absolutely no concerns over her starting high school as she is already taller than most of my year 9s where her best friend is tiny and still wears 6 year old clothes and will be titchy when she starts secondary next school year.

Fizziage · 05/01/2021 17:14

Ds14 was around 95th percentile when he was really young but has dropped to around 50th now. Still no signs of puberty so i’m guessing he’s just a late bloomer. He’s still taller than most of his friends despite not really starting puberty yet so I think he’ll be fairly tall.
Ds16 on the other hand sounds like yours @JustDanceAddict being over 6’2 and has a pretty full beard, even though he was never especially tall as a child. I suspect he may be overtaken by younger brother in a few years!

lockedownloretta · 05/01/2021 17:20

by year 6 my 99.6th centile son was in men's size 10 shoes.
he is now 20 and 6 foot 8 wearing size 14/15 shoes

Fizziage · 05/01/2021 17:23

Shock wow! Mine have both had their shoe size match school year for ages
