Boys- when did they stop growing?

Shedpaint · 10/08/2020 20:54

DS1 is 15 and seemed to complete puberty quite early by late 14 (needed to shave, hairy legs and body, voice had broken and looks much older) but is desperate to grow taller still.

His growth has definitely slowed and I’m worried he won’t add much more which will devastate him.
His feet haven’t grown for about 18m at least.

Any stories of late spurts I can cheer him up with?

'They' say boys tend to stop growing aged about 16 but one of mine has grown at least 5 inches in the last 12 months aged 17+

Fiddlersgreen · 10/08/2020 21:17

Mine is 16 and still growing

helpmum2003 · 10/08/2020 21:18

Boys can grow into early 20s.

How does his height compare to you and his Dad?

dartfordwarbler · 10/08/2020 21:20

21...at 6 foot 7 and size 15 shoes😳 thank god I thought he’d never stop.
His feet stopped about age 19 though

Neither of my boys even started puberty until 16/17 .....the 6 foot 7 one is 23 and still got a rubbishy beard😂😂😂

bruffin · 10/08/2020 21:21

Ds was 6ft at 13 but never grew after that

Kenworthington · 10/08/2020 21:22

Both of mine stopped at around 16. They’re both 6’3 with size 11 feet. They Both reached puberty around 11/12 though

DramaAlpaca · 10/08/2020 21:24

I've three sons in their 20s. All of them had a huge growth spurt at 14, at which point their feet stopped growing, then continued to grow taller and broader slowly but steadily until they were 20 or 21.

dartfordwarbler · 10/08/2020 21:24

Also, had a mate at school...known as “tidge”...about 5 foot 2 all the way through 6th form (a levels). Went off to uni...came back following summer as a lanky 6 foot something...still known as tidge today😂

WeAllHaveWings · 10/08/2020 21:25

Ds is 16 and had grown at least another inch during lockdown, he is now bang on 6ft with size 12 feet and quite pleased to be 2" taller than me!

Not sure if he has still got more to go, he has only had noticeable armpit hair and his voice deepened in the last few months.

RedStreetMonument · 10/08/2020 21:29

My ds was v hairy and deep voiced at 14, got small feet, not really grown since at all. He's about 5'9" and I can't see him growing more now he's 18, it's been too long.

frustrationcentral · 10/08/2020 21:30

DS1(16) hasn't grown much in the last year, maybe a couple of centimetres? He's 6ft 2 and has size 12/13 feet. I'd say he's pretty much there, deep voices and hairy Grin

Augustseemsbetter · 10/08/2020 21:32

They can as previous posters mention grow on into their early 20s!

Check family history on this. It seems very predictive ime.

At 15 I'd think your boy is more likely to grow a bit than not.

DariaMorgendorffer · 10/08/2020 21:35

Another vote for early 20s. It can differ, but it's not at all unrealistic to think he's still due a growth spurt.

Bumply · 10/08/2020 21:37

DS2 is 18 and put on at least an inch just during lockdown.
Ds1 did most of his growing 13-14 - so fast that he ended up with stretch marks, but had stopped growing by 18

Pikachubaby · 10/08/2020 21:40

Feet are the first thing that stops growing for teens

Boys grow until they are 21 I think

Madhairday · 10/08/2020 21:40

My dad is nearly 17 and still growing, he was pretty short for his age up til around a year ago when he had a growth spurt and went from around 5ft4 to 5ft9 in about a year. As his dad is 6ft3 I am expecting more growth. His voice has also deepened this year and other signs of puberty so seems he was just late to it. He's very thankful to be taller than me and his sister at last.

Madhairday · 10/08/2020 21:41

DS, not dad!🤣

Shedpaint · 10/08/2020 21:53

@dartfordwarbler that’s it though- yours grew late because puberty was late- DS has completed puberty essentially so I am worried he won’t grow much anymore

BlueJag · 10/08/2020 21:54

Ours is 14 grew from about 5'5 to 5'10 in a year. He'll be 15 in December. His feet aren't growing much he is 8 1/2 shoes.
How tall is your son now?

Shedpaint · 10/08/2020 21:55

@RedStreetMonument I think this will be the case for DS1
He’s not quite 5ft9 and desperate to be taller but I can’t see him managing much more

OP posts:
Eve · 10/08/2020 21:56

Both mine grew a foot in year 11, went from being one of the shortest to both now over 6ft.

Shedpaint · 10/08/2020 21:57

Mean parental height and red book prediction would put him at about 5’10 so I think that’s going to be about right If not a bit shorter

OP posts:
Germolenequeen · 10/08/2020 21:57

My DS is 23 & I think he's just about stopped 😆

Shedpaint · 10/08/2020 21:59

Sounds like all those growing into their 20s were very late to puberty and just had their big spurt early.
DS1 had a bit growth early 13-14 and now seems to have finished pretty much. He’s certainly completed puberty and I assume that would accompany the growth.

Another who would say they grow into early 20s.

My ds pays football with a group of lads that were at school together (so they are all 24), and recently played a pre-season friendly against a team who were all starting their U18 season. It was noticeable, to a man, who were 'the men' and who were 'the boys'. I mean, yes, beer bellies and beards came into it for some Grin but just overall the team were bigger and stronger, and ds's team have quite a few players that aren't particularly tall, but they would have been easy to guess which team every player was on.
