Teenage boys' clothes - where?

I was looking for a pair of shorts for ds who's a skinny, not especially short or tall (about 5' 5") nearly 14 year old. After queuing to get into bloody Next and forgetting that they don't bother to stock boys stuff past age 12 in store, I got an ok pair in M&S, but it got me thinking - where is good for teenage boys these days?

I think a 26" waist / S or XS mens would still be too massive, but are particular places cut narrow or do a decent range past 12? Are Hollisters and Jack Wills still a thing?

Most of the boys I know are head to toe in sports gear 99% of the time so we're ok for sourcing that sort of thing.

teenz shop shorts are good for this, they go up to age 16

My skinny 15 year old wears McKenzie and Champion shorts - they're jersey type shorts though

WhatHaveIFound · 17/07/2020 15:32

I have a 15 year old DS with a 25" waist (same height as your DS). He wear North Face or Under Armour shorts. Occasionally I find a pair of aged 11-12 long shorts in Primark that fit him because they tie at the waist.

RoseDog · 17/07/2020 15:36

JD or sports direct for sporty shorts, usually under armour or north face, my ds was 6ft at 14 so needed men's sizes, for smarter shorts that he never wears H&M again man sizes! Also boohoo and ASOS man.

Actually the McKenzie jersey shorts on the JD Sport website look pretty much what I was wanting (I think that's what I found hardest about post-lockdown shopping - the queuing made me want to just get what I was looking for asap so I didn't think about going into more than a couple of places).

Do they have proper adjustable waists? E.g. decent elastic or a proper all the way round drawstring? Ds is such a skelf.

TeenzShop looks like a good shout.

And I just realised I must have walked right past H&M on my way to M&S Angry

They have a proper drawstring, otherwise they would fall off my son

RoseDog · 17/07/2020 15:50

Most of ds sports shorts have proper drawstrings, he also has a tiny waist.

RedOasis · 17/07/2020 15:52

Have you tried h and m?

KittyHawke80 · 17/07/2020 15:54

Another vote for H&M here.

weegiemum · 17/07/2020 16:17

H&M is where my 18 year old ds has shopped since 13-14. He's 6'3" but like a lamppost. No shape to him at all.

The other place I bizarrely got shorts for him last year was Tesco. He tried them on before I told him where they were from then happily wore them all summer.

sleepyhead · 17/07/2020 17:58

Thanks all. I can't believe I forgot about H&M.

Lots of good ideas. He'll happily wear last years clothes which are half way up his calves and forearms so I'm having a cull. Shorts aren't so bad as he's mostly grown upwards rather than outwards, but still - I draw the line at age 8-9 Hmm

JD Sports and H&M next visit out.

the teenzshop ones have elastic all the way round, my ds has the jersy type ones

NCTDN · 19/07/2020 08:37

I've just bought some in the Adidas sale.

Rosebud2005 · 19/07/2020 19:39

Mine prefers the Jersey type shorts

GreenTulips · 19/07/2020 19:51

Try finding them with zip pockets - a must have for his medication!

BigusBumus · 21/07/2020 15:10

My rapidly growing teens cut their jogging bottoms into shorts when they grow too tall for them. If you stretch the cut bit it kind of curls and looks like a finished hem. Kind of.

NCTDN · 21/07/2020 15:29

@GreenTulips the Adidas shorts have zip pockets.

YgritteSnow · 21/07/2020 15:30

GAP and H&M. Also George at Asda do really nice summer shirts. I was surprised at how nice the design and quality was.

GreenTulips · 21/07/2020 17:13

Some Adidas shorts have pockets - they aren’t always right on the descriptions!!

QueenofLouisiana · 22/07/2020 14:01

Another vote for H&M, in freer times we bought everything in French supermarkets as the cut seems slimmer. Now at 6’2” aged 15 I buy everything from ASOS and T-shirts and coats from TKmaxx.
