DD14 and freedom!

I've just found a photo on Instagram that DD14 has been tagged in. She's in a river/lake with a friend, also 14, who has a can of lager in her hand. They're in swimwear, DD obviously borrowed a friend's as it's not hers.
They're in yr9 and DD will be 15 in Sept.
Now, I have no idea where they are and I don't think its walking distance.
We're quite relaxed about where she goes, and she doesn't need to tell us so long as we know who she's with. I'm going to talk to her about the photo, but wondered what others do with regards to knowing exactly where their teens are. I could ask her to share her location on Google maps (she's got an iphone but mine's Samsung) but not sure if that feels a bit too much like checking up on her? Or maybe I should be?
DD17 is completely different and not at all a rule breaker so this is all very new!

I'm pretty laid back with my 14 and 16 yr old DC, but I wouldn't be happy with this. She knew she should have told you about where she was and didn't, so lied by omission. I'd be having strong words about why this rule is in place, and the lying.

I wouldn't check her phone, but I'd let her know that you could if you needed to. In fact, if she was not where she was supposed to be, that's exactly what you'd be doing.

I generally know approximately where my 14 year old is, but we do live outside of the UK and have no family support or real friends here, so there's no back-up when things go wrong. It's quite normal for her to go to the lake with her friends, as there's not a lot else to do round here - but I would go nuts if I caught her drinking and it would be instant grounding and I'd be on the phone to her friend's parents lol
