GTA

My 14 year old DS has asked if he can have GTA on his xbox, as apparently his friends are all playing it now. He says they just fly planes, race boats, do bank heists etc - no rape and murder, which is what i had heard about GTA.

I know it's an 18 but we all know plenty of kids play games that they're technically too young for, but I wanted to see what other people thought of this particular game.

thanks

I started playing GTA before I was 18 and I still play it now. I do murder people but I don't rape anyone. And it hasn't damaged me in any way. However only you know your child and if they can 'cope' with it. Also if you your child is playing it and their behaviour changes you know it could be the game and if you say no, sorry to say but they just play it anyway at their friends house.

I think that it depends on your child's maturity. In GTA you can 'murder' people, but raping someone isn't even a thing. Usually peoples behaviour doesn't really change, they just find it funny to kick someone in the street. Having said that, there are hookers and strip clubs, but if you expose your child to the internet freely, GTA is a lot less explicit than what they can do elsewhere.

If they really will stick to just the car chases, then that's fine.

Very easy to go to other content. Is the computer somewhere where you can easily supervise what he's actually doing

Sounds like his friends play online, which is different to the actual story mode and probably less likely to result in the things your worried about as it is mostly racing and heists, but shooting too. Real people are probably more of a danger when playing online.

The story mode is as pp describe. You can't rape anyone, but there are quite obvious suggestions one of the playable characters has just raped someone in a cutscene.

If he has internet at home, by 14, I'm sure he's seen worse things that are real.
