Selective Mutism in teens - any experience?

Has anyone have experience of selective Mutism in teens? School suggested DS14 could be mute - he's never been comfortable in social situations or with strangers but lately even his teachers/ myself can't get much words from him. On rare occasions he can talk very complicated matters with me. I always thought that mutism meant not talking at all - now I feel bad about not spotting it sooner. I looked it up online and he ticks all the boxes. The school will be making a CAMHS referral. I read that the earlier this is diagnosed and treated the better. Now that he is 14, is it too late? As no one knows how long the waiting list will be, I am wondering what we can do in the meanwhile?
