What should I expect?
What can she eat?
Will it be terrible?

Pain killers and make sure they give you some wax to put over it if it cuts gums. This is only for needed for first few days.

Drum2018 · 29/10/2019 22:55

Both teens have had them. They were sore/tender for a couple of days but they took paracetamol. They can cut the inside of the mouth and neither of mine found the wax any good (you put it over the brackets that might be irritating). Soft foods like mashed potato, fish, soup might suit best for the first couple of days, though dd managed to eat fine (Ds needed the soft food). They can be tender when tightened also.

Bonjela.
Ibuprofen. .
Soft foods.

Let her eat whatever she wants the night before!!

The wax is terrible. I remember when I had mine fitted that it was about 4 days before I could bite down on anything and even then it was tender.

As above but also if one of the bands pop off get it replaced asap cuz the tooth can move out of line and set treatment back

Soft food

  • soup
  • Weetabix
  • cottage pie
then less soft but finely chopped, whatever they really like

Lots of sympathy and encouragement.

DD was in tears the first meal but after 2-3 days she was fine. Always in bit achy after each adjustment too but no problems eating.

We got appointments in whatever non-core lessons she dislikes most. She's now in y10 so appointments are in PE and ICT. Last year it was French and Art.

DD (13) had a brace fitted a few months ago. She says:

  • take painkillers before you go as it pulls your teeth about
  • take lip balm as your lips get really chapped
  • only very soft foods (soup, icecream) for the first few days as you don't feel like eating
  • anything cold helps
  • it took about a week to get used to it
  • the wax didn't help

Ah thank you everyone!
I read the date wrong (great start!), it’s tomorrow so we had pizza for dinner and now I’m armed with a shopping list of your recommendations.
Having a brace done on Halloween... she’s so upset she won’t be able to eat her sweets (while I’m quite excited that there will be loads for me!).
