Travel with teenagers/older children. Up to what age did yours share a room?

When we go s/c and rent a cottage we like lots of space, and the boys (currently 8 and 10) usually get a bedroom each.

But if we do a city break, we usually get a family room in a hotel or B&B, and they come in with us, which is obviously much cheaper.

At what age should I reasonably expect them to start objecting to this? What age have you done this with your children?

Mine will always have to share. With four kids it is not an option! and they seem to enjoy it. If they start objecting then they can stay at home

Oh thanks, but I think I didn't express myself clearly.

I mean in a hotel they share with us: 4 in 1 room. Travel Inn, for example, will book you a family room with children up to 15. But I don't know how 15 yr-old boys would feel about sharing with their parents?

At home they actually share a bedroom, by choice. (But incidentally when we have a cottage we try and get 3 bedrooms so that they each have a bit of space, and we get more peace in the evenings!)

my 13 ds & (nearly) 12 dd don't object yet. Or if they do, they haven't said. However, for more than the occasional night, I think we'd all object.

I think when they can afford to pay towards the cost then they can object. 2 boys or 2 girls, why worry....I still would share with my sister if I had to and we're big girls now!

roisin, I see, abit more explaination, so I would say it depends on where hotel is, I suppose!

My 15yo DS and 13yo DS happily shared with 10yo DD. They were so exhausted that they didn't have time to think about it.

We all shared a room in Florida when DS was 16 & DD 14 - we decided it wasn't worth the extra for another room when we weren't likely to be in there much.
Now they're 19 & 17 they go off on their own holidays anyway, but if we went for a short break, we'd get 2 rooms & I'd share one with DD, and DH & DS would have the other.

We used to book youth hostel family rooms. the last time we did this d1was 16, dd2 13 and dd1 11. They were all quite happy to do thhis anddidn't mind sharing with me and DH.

We still share a room on the odd occasion - it's not ds (15) who moans, but dd (14)!

We have DSs now 15 and 16; we now always get two rooms. Not really practical to do anything else because of wardrobe space for one thing - you should see how many clothes they pack for a holiday! Also, sharing a bathroom would be a pain. And - they come in later than us at night so we would be disturbed if we had to share. Last time we "sort of" shared, they had a bed sofa in the sitting room of an apartment but there was no cupboard space and just the one bathroom/loo which was off our bedroom so there was no privacy! That is the other thing of course. We would have no sex life if we had to share with them!!

B&B - we shared a room last year - the children were 12 & 15. Generally it's cheaper to share. We intend on going to London for a few days later this year and we'll still share if possible (13 & 16).

Abroad we usually have a 1 or 2 bed apartment and at least one of the children slept in the living area. With 3 it's expensive whichever way you work it. Thankfully (for financial reasons anyway) ds1 has grown out of family holidays. I miss him though

Agree on the sex life thing motheroftwoboys. Complete lack of it when you have teenage kids.

Last time we went on a proper holiday we shared a room with the youngest 2 who were 14 and 12.

If we go anywhere like a Travelodge we all stay in the same room (unless we have all the DCs then there are too many). Regularly share with 15 yo and 19 yo DS.

We are going to Barcelona in two weeks and have booked a triple room for me, DH and DS who will have his 16th birthday over there. I cannot afford to be booking separate single room just for him.

Also, if you are sharing with a teenager, you are there to hoik them out of bed at a reasonable time for breakfast, gee them up through the bathroom etc.

Mine share rooms at home, so expected on holiday!

ds is 15 and shares with dd on holiday. tbh though as she has cp it is the only way we can do it. i shared with my db untill i was about 15 as well. it was fine.
