First period

Hello you lovely knowledge lot. My 13 year old started her first period today. She was at school and spoke to a friend then went to the school nurse to get supplies (she had some in anticipation but didn't have them with her). She seems really chilled and grown up about it too.

My question is what pads do teenagers prefer these days. I had a pack of starter pads ready for her which she has in her room but I want to buy her supplies so she has plenty. I've asked but she says anything is fine.

And tampons? What's your views on these for a girl who has just started?

Any info would be gratefully received.

My DD is 15 and has tried a fare few different brands e.t.c in the 2 years since starting and is now only using ALDI's own and I don't know what it is but they're are her favourite ones. She isn't to keen on tampons generally only uses them when she goes swimming but she finds pads the comfiest.

My just turned 12 year old had her first period last week. I was not prepared! I didn't start until 15 and my mum 16. My daughter only showed other signs of puberty earlier this year. Thankfully she had some Always pads from a talk at school, that got her through the first day until I could get more. She hated the wings on them though which is something to consider.

We had previously discussed the environmental impact of disposable sanitary towels, and she chose to use washable CSP, but I'd only bought a couple so far so I went out and bought the Lilet teen sets. There is a first period one, that has a selection to try that comes in a zipped bag, which will come in handy,and I got an extra of their teen pads as they are on 3 for 2 in Boots. The teen pads seem really small and thin.

I also really like the idea of period pants, but they all seem to be in adult sizes or black, and I don't think the black are ideal for her to get used to working out her flow etc. If anyone can reccomend some I would be grateful.

DD is 11 and has had periods for a year. Won't entertain the idea of tampons. She's tried lilets teen range, bodyform sensitive and now the bodyform foam ones. She likes the foam ones, says they are comfy. She won't change a pad at school (Y6) so i have to get heavy flow ones to last her through the day.

She also has a pair of modibodi period pants for dance/gym as it's less obvious under a leotard than a pad with wings. An adult size 6 is the size of Next girls undies age 11-12 ie they come up small.

Really useful thanks ladies. It's all a bit 'spoilt for choice'. In my day there was no choice at all.

I just make sure my bathroom has winged pads (supermarket own brand) and tampons, my DD's help themselves as do I.

Pads, not thick, not scented or "fresh" (because they sting) and tampons with applicator - go for basic tampax to avoid excessive plastic.

The Lilets teen lads look so small. I really can't remember, do their periods start out light in the first years?

@poopypants I think it depends. Hence wanting to have all bases covered!

DD started with 11.5 and uses the Lilets teen if necessary but I do think they are really small. Tampons are waiting but as I refused any until I was 19 I don’t feel I can push her too much.

The best in our house though are Modibodis, great for PE days or when she is on the stables all day where changing can be quite grim. She rinses them after wearing and i just bung them in the washing machine,

reluctantbrit I don't understand period pants. They hold 1-2 tampons worth of blood. So as most women require more than 2 tampons a day, does that mean you need to take spare pants and change them half way through the day? And carry the soiled ones in a bag? I can see how they would be great for when you are expecting your period or at the end but how does it work during full flow?

I just brought a selection of pads and tampons (that she is yet to try) and told her to let me know which she preferred/didnt like.
I also got her to put a period app on phone so she can predict when due to try and avoid future accidents.

DD changes after coming home from school. So far we had no issues but her period is still developing. So she wears them for around 7 hours. I got her the moderate to heavy ones and one pair designed for overnight use.

The problem with changing is why I haven't moved from pads. My period is currenlty either very heavy, changing every 2 hours to non existing/one paid per day in one day. I can't change properly at work, also a cup is impossible with no sink in the cubicles. so pads fo rme unitl menopause hits hopefully soon.

Honestly, with someone who is absolutely embarrassesd to use pads at school and throwing away underwear period pants are a godsend.
