Is it appropriate to give 11 year old iPhone 8 for birthday? I am buying my dd her first phone and have found an amazing deal. I’m just not sure it sits right with me.

My niece got her Iphone8 at 10, make sure you buy a case and a protector . What difference does it make if is a 5 or an 8 , they both do the same thing? if you can afford it , go for it 👍

If you can afford it and you know they'll appreciate it and look after it ,, then it's entirely upto you

How much is that? £600+?

I wouldn't because that is imo far too much to spend on a gadget that is being taken out of the house and can get lost / damaged / stolen easily. Especially as a first phone - you have no real idea of how well she will look after it.

It will almost certainly get lost/broken fairly quickly. The case will come off because they're not cool or whatever. It it's a great deal and you're prepared for this, fine, but really don't expect an 11 year old to look after their phone.

I am Shock at getting 11yos mobile phone!

Get her a half decent smart phone by all accounts but don't waste a ridiculous amount of money on an 11yo - maybe re-evaluate the situation when she is 13/14 and more mature.

ds had an iphone 5 at 11 for xmas. think it was around £300 or something close. no way would I have spent in excess of £600 (or whatever an iphone 8 costs) for him

He currently has and is happy with an iphone 6 he got a couple of years ago after proving he could take care of his first couple of mobile phones (and I am still using his old iphone 5)

Get it on contract. Lots of DS's friends unwittingly ruined theirs at the first foam party at age 12. DS had a Samsung on a contract at Tesco & they replaced it by just extending the contract a few months which seemed ridiculously reasonable.

Thanks so much for all your advice. I think you’ve confirmed my feeling that no matter how good a deal it is it’s too soon!
