DD stressed after getting braces removed today

So DD got her braces removed today and she's gotten 2 types of retainers a removable type for top and bottom teeth and Perminant ones on her top teeth. She hates the perminant retainer's it's causing her major bother because

  • everything tastes strongly of metal
  • there's pain
  • the rules for it are the same as braces
  • it's bothering her since it's technically a big piece of wire in her mouth
She hates it and wants it out since she'd rather have the removable ones. After what happened to my brother with them (the perminant ones ended up doing more harm than good) I'm not sure I like them either. So can we get them removed and just keep the removable retainers. I don't know anyone who's gotten both but at the same time none of them went to this orthadontist before.

My ds has permanent retainers too and bottom and got used to them very quickly. I'm sure that in a few days time your daughter won't even notice it.

As for the 'rules' being the same as for braces, the orthodontist told us that stuff like chewing gum, crusty bread, apples etc should be fine. Just take a bit of care if anything is really crunchy.

I'm sorry she's so stressed by this but hopefully by this time next week she'll have forgotten they ever bothered her. If she still hates them by the time her review appointment with the orthodontist comes round, perhaps you could discuss removing them?

Should say top and bottom in the first sentence of my post!

Should add he mentioned to her when she went in to get them off That they were putting the line on only for a few hours while he made the retainer. that's worrying her the most that it was apparently coming off. He didn't look in her mouth when she got the retainer he just asked if it fit

I had my braces out ten years ago and still have the retaining wires top and bottom. Personally I think they are fab and have no plans to ever have them removed.

I have never bothered to wear my removable retainer and my teeth have stayed in place. My DS was not given wires and his teeth have moved despite wearing a retainer at night.

She will get used to the wire just as she did the braces.

I had a bottom one (until it pinged out). My dentist told me that even the tiniest thing on your mouth seems huge. Let her sleep on it. If it’s still feeling horrible in a day or so take her back to check it’s in ok.
