when did your DS go through puberty?

DS is 13, will be 14 in August. He has a few spots on his face but that's it - no pubic/underarm hair, no sign of his voice breaking. I'm aware that technically age 14 is the age at which it counts as "delayed puberty", but I'm wondering how common it is to start this late.

thank you

Body hair growth and voice changing are relatively late signs of puberty in boys.

Earlier signs are his skin changing, hair getting greasier and growth "down below". If these things are happening (appreciate you may not be aware of the third but maybe his father would know) then it's all proceeding as it should.

Oh you can also look for nose and ears growing and so being out of proportion w head and face (they catch up) and ditto growth of hands and feet. These start before the main growth spurt in height.

Mintychoc1 · 06/02/2019 10:35

thank you - hands and feet getting bigger and definitely spots/greasy skin, so I guess it's just a matter of time till he gets hair and a deep voice

I have the same worry!

DS is almost 14, and no armpit hair or voice broken yet, still has a baby face too

Only difference is height (5ft10) and a moustache Shock but mainly he looks just like a very tall child, with size 10 feet

I guess it can all vary a lot?

I must know a lot of lads with 'delayed' puberty, then.

DS is 4 months short of 15 & only in last few months does he have some lip fluff hair. I think his voice lurches down erratically. He's growing fast, rate of about 4 inches/yr. Go to a sports event for this age group & they are at huge range of stages.

My twins (boy and girl) are just thirteen and both changing very rapidly. Daughter has all signs of puberty but afaik hasn’t started periods. I reckon she will v soon.

Son is growing like a weed, has facial fluff on top lip and voice is breaking.

I don't have sons but have much younger half brothers. My brothers shot up to 6ft+ at around 13/14 and everything else happened at a similar time. But, I remember up until he 10/11 half of the year looking 20 and half looking 11. It's very individual. Don't worry just yet.

Roomba · 08/02/2019 16:16

It is very individual. My 13yo has been spotty for about 18m, his voice has broken and he certainly has hairy pits and legs - that's as much as I know or want to know. Many of his classmates are a foot shorter than him, still squeaky voiced and don't look like they're anywhere near puberty yet.

weegiemum · 08/02/2019 16:23

Ds was about 12 when he started getting greasy and smelly.

Voice "changed" (I put it in brackets because the kid was born with a voice in his boots) ie started to squeak about 13.

What else? Girls became hyper important by 13. I really found male puberty hard to pin down as I had 2 girls. Need for deodorant was the biggest thing!

JustDanceAddict · 09/02/2019 09:11

My ds is 14.5. His voice started to change age 12, but that was the first sign - along with the fluffy moustache (he needs to shave that once a week now) & BO. Once he turned 13 he shot up (has grown 7 inches in just under 2 years), grew underarm and pubes, etc. He’s spotty too and has been on meds for that for a few months. He needs to fill out now as he’s a rake.
It def varies with his friends though - I would say his best friend is behind him and is very fresh faced still but he is a few months younger.

ShelleyMae · 09/02/2019 18:44

My son is same age, 14 in August just started getting spots, no underarm hair yet and voice hasn’t broken yet.

Taffeta · 09/02/2019 18:48

DS didn't start any early signs til 14. Spots etc

He's 15 now but has only had fuzz on top lip & deep voice about 6 months.

Lkbbdg · 09/02/2019 18:49

DS is 14, his voice broke during the last 6 months, he's not needing to shave and hasn't got adult hairy legs, under arm hair and doesn't need to shave yet but his muscles have developed a lot and he's gone from 5 foot 3 to 5 foot 10 since the end of the summer holidays. His friends range from 5 foot to 6 foot. He's got an adult face and doesn't look much like a child any more.

Andtheskyisgrey · 09/02/2019 19:02

My DS is 13.5. Still not even 5' yet (but DH and I are stumpy!). He has had BO since about 10 or 12, but I have always put that down to the amount of sport he does and school not giving them time for showers afterwards. He gets an occasional tiny spot, but that could also be the lack of showers when sweaty. No sign of anything else that I am aware of, although he has become a lot more private in the last 3 months or so, up until then he was prancing round the house naked quite regularly 🙄
