My daughter is 15 and has Downs she goes to mainstream. Someone in her school has set up a private Instagram account in her name to take the piss out of her.

I did the “report an impersonation account’ procedure last night and I’ve had an email reply asking for more information but when I pressed reply and explained the circumstances I realised that the ‘to’ field was empty so whatever they’ve used to send me an email isn’t a valid address to reply back to

I’m so confused and don’t know what to do

I haven’t seen that but on the impersonation thread complaint there is an option for ‘someone has created an account impersonating someone I represent ( ie a child) . I would tick that and send . It sends automatically.

That is terrible. You must feel so hurt.

I would contact the school. While they might not be able to get directly involved they may advise.

Hope you get it sorted. Have you contacted the school? We are now being asked to consider peer to peer abuse in "contextual safeguarding". But basically schools are being asked to work with the wider community as so much peer to peer abuse happens outside school. The school will want to know (to support your daughter).

This happened to my daughter - no SN - but still upsetting for her. Instagram, to their credit, were very efficient about taking the spam account down.
Definitely tell the school. Your daughter needs all the extra advocacy she can get.

DS2 has ASD. Last summer, some lads in his year set up a fake Instagram account using DS2's full name, and listing his school / hometown in the bio. The purpose of the account was to mock DS2 and his interests (he is socially quite young for his age).

The school couldn't do anything as it was just after GCSEs and the Y11s had all left.

I reported the account to Instagram, explaining that it had been set up to mock him and that he has SEN. I followed Instagram's procedure, which included proving DS2's identity (taking a photo of him holding his passport open at the photo page) as they requested.

Their response:
"We're not able to remove the account you reported. We remove impersonation accounts that are meant to mislead, confuse or deceive others."

The account still exists.

I would contact the police.

How absolutely awful, I'm so sorry this has happened. Definitely contact the school and to be honest, I would also contact the police. If you can give instagram a crime reference number I should think it will help.

Social media is the curse of our society
