Demob happy after GCSEs; anyone else gritting teeth?

DS1 did really well despite medical problems, and we're really proud of how hard he worked. His behaviour at the school hasn't been the best over the years and he is in with a slightly 'naughty' group tho this is at a grammar school, so we're talking attitude and a bit of lip rather than setting fire to the school. He's lucky to have been invited back for sixth form as I wouldn't blame the staff for being fed up with him and his mates. They've all done really well in their exams. However since results day we've hardly seen him; two parties and overnight stays, imagine weed being smoked (has been in the past) and obv some drink. He's been home today after I picked him up; rude, stroppy, uncooperative and generally pain in the arse. If he hadn't just nailed 12 good grades I'd be bawling him out and locking Xbox controller away! Am gritting teeth and trying to accept he is having some down time....anyone else got similar?

Not in the same situation but what is he interested in re A Levels and beyond? Now is the time for him to have goals. He needs “bigger boys” to look up to!

Oh he has a bigger picture....medicine , Neurosurgery... can't complain about lack of ambition but he's pushing my buttons this week post partying!

Start looking at unis early. Go to open days or wander around some campuses. I work at a university that is very medical and we often see the younger ones. Instills a sense of awe I think lol!

He even did a week's work experience in the summer at Gt Ormond St , in surgery! Just hope this party/arrogant/stroppy phase stops once sixth form starts on the 4th.

If he got great WE under belt & great results then maybe just cut him slack. 6th form starts in 10 days time, right?

To be fair I've slightly been gritting my teeth most of the holidays. My two have both been home whilst I've been at work, plates and cups and wrappers strewn about and waiting for me to cook dinner. My DD has been partying ALOT. GCSE DS more gaming.

I've cut them done slack but now instituted them cooking one meal a week and got DD to sort out her bedroom. Bringing in a little bit more organisation now ready for the next academic year.

I’d look at it with mixed blessings my son has also just got his results and I’m slightly disappointed that his only celebrations have been with us. Post exams he had a few parties but nothing post results day. Instagram photos show that quite a few in his year were partying, all be it in small groups. A little part of me wishes he’d had a get together with his mates. On another note would you mind giving me some advice on how to get work experience in a hospital? My daughter is in year 10 and is hoping to become an anethetist and really would like to get some appropriate work experience but we don’t have any medical connections?

DS has been on a school trip and away with us and then away with friends and then at Reading Festival (back later) with parties and out swimming in the river in between. We have hardly seen him.

A week until he goes back to school so when he is back later we are going to have the time to calm it down a bit before 6th Form chat

I have the opposite problem - my ds rarely goes out, no socialising post exam results, we took him out for a meal and visited family but that's it. I asked if he has contacted friends and he said no. He seems quite happy though, but I do worry about him being isolated.

DD has been ok - also great results but no major partying as she’s not a party person but her turning nose up at dinner tonight pissed me off, esp with her grandma here, so I said she had to cook at least one night this week before school starts again. She promised she would before her gcses started but then got busy and we went away so it never happened!

God 16 year olds are lovely! Yep I am cutting him some slack but we will be having a chat before he starts VI form about his attitude/behaviour in year 12 and the need to grow up a bit. Ask your local hospital about work experience,; a lot of them have some sort of WE programme. Or local gp surgery.

Thanks Minx, I’ve asked the local GP’s surgery and they won’t take anyone under 16. I’ll try the hospital.
