Hi there
I'm just wondering as new to all of this, as our 17 nearly 18yr old is planning on going to Uni September 2019, If she gets herself organised!! however I'm wondering how soon they should have their personal statement done? to this date they still haven't written it? and I do believe applications for the course she wants have to be in by end of September this year? She didn't to brilliantly in her AS levels and requires A at A level for the course she wants to do so will have to do some studying over the final year in 6th form!, What can I do! I feel she thinks it will just happen OMG!!

Her school or college should help her get her UCAS application ready in time. Personal statement is quite important (and good for a teenager to have to think through) but grades are all that matter, really.
Teachers should also predict her grades - so if they can't predict an A then she is unlikely to get an offer. Encourage her to aim high but be realistic - no point getting disheartened. There will be courses in her reach or just out of it - plenty of places to choose from as it is a buyer's market at the moment. More places than students.

My Dd had a lot of help from school. Her godmother is a teacher and knew roughly what the teaching course would require jargon wise.

Think she needed her rough draft in by Sept then she finally submitted in December.

DS1 started writing his personal statement in early December, the evening before the school deadline. Luckily he got five offers.

More organised applicants usually start planning and writing the first draft in the September of Y13.

If she is applying for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine her application will need to be completed by 15 October, and school will likely have a much earlier deadline than that for PS draft. I know DS had his first draft ready for the beginning of y13 last year. It was then refined heavily over the next few weeks, before submission for the early applicants.
In short, if it is an early application she does need to get cracking!
