Dd in agony after norethisterone

Wonder if anyone can help, dd (15) was taking Norethisterone whilst we were on holiday, took her last one on Wednesday and started her period yesterday.
She is in absolute agony, she has been up all night in tears and is doubled over today, we’ve been alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol, and she has a hot water bottle. She normally has slightly painful periods but I’ve never seen her like this, she is normally such a tough cookie and not one to cry!
Is there anything else we can do? I didn’t realise the Norethisterone delaying her period would cause it to become so painful.

Can you look up a 24 hr pharmacy nearby?
Maybe go and speak to the pharmacist. They may have something stronger and more area specific in the painkiller department and also might have something for the cramps.

I would keep her hydrated, run her a bath and make sure she has lots of sanitary wear as if it’s heavy she will need it.
Also, consider making her a GP appointment - going on the pill would help with flow and pain plus she would get to control when she has a withdrawal bleed.

She just has to get through this one though - it’s tough and she has my sympathy. Period pains can be utter agony . 8m dreading my DD starting her periods.

We had exactly the same when mine took this . The period when it started was horrific- but did settle after the first day or so and there were no lasting effects.

I had this. First period after was absolutely horrific for 48 hours or so. There was a thread on here not long ago with lots of people saying the same. for her.

Thanks everyone, I’m wary of phoning anywhere today as I can’t take dd anywhere - but if she’s as bad tomorrow I’ll definitely take her to the Gp. I do have stronger painkillers in the house but with her being 15 I didn’t know if she could take them - would 111 be able to advise that or would it be a waste of time?
helped her into the bath earlier and she’s been trying to sleep - I feel so bad I suggested this mecinine to her, I had no idea it was common to have such a painful period when you stop them.
She doesn’t actually seem to be heavy, just a lot of pain.
The pill is actually a good idea thanks, as she’s usually all over the place - the only good thing about the Norethisterone was that it totally curtailed her mood swings, but she’s sworn that she’s never ever taking it again, poor thing can’t even stand up straight.

Would it be worth buying a TENS machine if she's still bad tomorrow? They're on the expensive side, but you could sell it on. Don't feel guilty - you can never tell how norethisterone will affect you. I was fully expecting a nightmare period and was fine.

Ooh I have a tens machine! Never gave that a thought, thank you I’ll get it out and let her try that.
I’ve had notheristerone before too (granted a few years ago) and was perfectly fine, still feeling the mum guilt though!

I took this medication for constant bleeding while I was using the implant. Having done labour with no pain killers (not by choice but that's another story!!) I can tell you that the utter agony of the norethesterone was probably worse! Like one very long contraction but you can't push! It was utter hell! But it's not on the list of side effects and the dr never mentioned it. I had a load of tests done to rule out anything so probably a trip to the gp. I'm not at all qualified to advise but just wanted to add my experience in case it's of any help whatsoever. I don't know how the drug works at all. It stops you bleeding but your body still wants to bleed but it can't so it's just agony. I have never taken it again xx

A tens machine would be a good idea! I second that. It should stop within the day hopefully xxx don't feel guilty either. Like i said i wasn't advised about any painful side effects by my doctor so how is anyone supposed to know? Xx

For anyone else reading this, do your research before pumping yourself full of hormones. Same with the pill, look how many people have problems with that.

I hope your daughter feels better soon OP. Please please don't suggest she goes on the pill without a better understanding of the side effects.

Going on the pill as a teenager was the best thing for me at the time.

As for others my DD was like this when she took it to delay period. But only a day or so and no lasting impact. Reckon TENS is a good shout and ibuprofen, a microwave wheat bag, chocolate, ice cream and a good movie from the 80s she hasn't seen?!

I haven't got much advice only sympathy, I was the same after taking norethistone but I was 21 and better able to cope than a young teen.

She just has to painkiller up, and ride it out I'm afraid

Mine was in agony even when in delay for the period. She decided she would much rather have a period than this pain on holiday. Poor girl. Hope it is better soon

My daughter was violently ill the last time she took Norethisterone before a holiday, she was as sick as a dog and couldn't be prescribed anything as it was deemed hormonal. She had a horrendous holiday journey. The first time she took it she had a really painful period afterwards but no vomiting. I've taken it in the past with no problems. Hope your daughter gets some relief soon.

ignore anti-drug generic spouting and blaming. medication has different effects on different people. If period more than a minor inconvenience treatment is needed, and different drugs are available.

I didn't think it was anti-drug generic spouting. Just a few parents of teenage girls who had a bad experience. Not anything life threatening, just painful and not quite what they wanted

Thanks everyone, she liked the tens machine on her back and she managed to get some sleep, she doesn’t seem quite as sore today, thankfully. Waiting on a call back from the gp to see if she can take any other painkillers.
We got the notheristerone tablets from the GP, who said most of the side effects listed happen most likely when you take it long term, and dd wasn’t to take it more than 10 days. Neither the gp, nor the patient information leaflet mention the severe period pain as a side effect. Perhaps my ignorance, but we were keeping an eye on her whilst on the tablets, not when she stopped them.
We will definitely look into the pill, and make an informed decision together.

It does tend to do that especially when you get cramps anyway. I learnt through bitter experience, there's nothing you can do but ride it out with industrial quantities of ibuprofen. The pill was the best thing I ever did to delay them.

How is your daughter OP? I've been taking norethisterone for the last 3 months after almost two years of non-stop periods, 60-90 days on then 5-12 days off, rinse and repeat. Its been a godsend, but I do dread the eventual release when I have to take a break from them. I hope your daughter is feeling better now.

Hope your daughter is feeling better now. Can anyone tell me how this medicine works. My 16 year old may want to use it in october to delay here period for a week. How do you know when to start taking it if your periods are irregular . Thanks
