At the Dinner Table

Our child was reading a book whilst sitting alone and having breakfast this morning. My other half got upset and told our child not to read while eating breakfast. Frankly, I am simply happy in this day and age our child is reading at all! But to the point - what is wrong with reading whilst eating breakfast alone - it wasn't rude (no one was ignored), it wasn't a dinner party. What do you all think?

I think your other half is being fucking ridiculous.

Was your dp expecting your dc to stand at his entering the kitchen? He is an arse to dictate what a dc can do when he isn't offending anyone!! Our teens have to read during registration every day at school.

So the kid just has to sit in silence eating? I'd be more likely to be on my phone or in front of the TV. Your OH is being ridiculous.

If eating alone I think reading a book is perfectly fine.

It would be different if said child was sitting reading her book when the rest of the family were at the table with her.

This makes me think of the dad of one of my pupils who gets really shitty about his son reading books. I think it's because his literacy skills are limited so he doesn't understand the love of reading or feels threatened that his son is doing something he can't.

Thank you for your responses. I am the husband by the way. :)

i think its perfectly fine as well, plus its good for them to learn to eat slowly instead of wolfing it down so it helps to time eating a bit better.

Your OH is being totally unreasonable. I could understand if the kid was glued to a phone screen but he was reading on his own. Poor kid.
