Best car?

Hi...My son is about to turn 18 and we'd like to help him buy a cheap but reliable and safe car. It needs to be one which has a low insurance group.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

Our two sons share a Toyota Aygo - it's 1.0 engine and the lowest insurance we could find. For a new driver it was just over £900 p/a with a black box on but no limits on driving at night - important as older son was driving late at night from work at the time. The Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108 are also basically the same cars I think.

Thank you, that's really helpful.

One with a small engine

DD (20) has had an Aygo for just over 2 years. The insurance was £1200 (with black box) for the first year, £600 the following year and £500 this year.

Thanks, I'll look into the Aygo. Sounds perfect.

When looking a quotes don't just automatically go for those that insist on a black box being fitted. We have found that it doesn't always follow that they are the cheapest. Oh, and over estimate rate than under estimate the mileage restrictions as some companies charge an astronomical amount to increase the mileage allowance once the policy is in force.

Safe is entirely up to him, not the car.
