Work experience

DD15 is going to do her 2 week school work experience and we're struggling to think of where. She can't do it in the job she'd eventually like to do because of the sensitivity/confidentiality issue. So we've decided instead to look at what she'd enjoy. Photographers and magazines can't accommodate because of age restrictions and ideally she doesn't want office or retail. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Just to add it doesn't matter if she does work experience somewhere she would not ideally want to work. The aim is to get experience of the world of work. Is what I always told my work experience trainees

And it's not true that magazines and photographers can't take people due to age restrictions. They just don't want to take someone if they say that!

I think magazines are exceptionally difficult to get work experience on though they get thousands of applications

I bet. It sounds so exciting to them.

Have you considered a photographer's'rep agency? Although it's not working directly with a magazine, she can see what it's like to book photographers for shoots and how their portfolios are put together and basically, how they are represented by their agents.

Also, if she knows the name of a few photographers (look online, look at the agents' websites) she can contact them to see if she can shadow them and their assitants on actual shoots/in studio.

This. And the whole experience of finding work herself is at least as valuable as anything she would be allowed to do in the "most perfect fit with her dream job"-placement.

DS did his work experience in the civil service. He wants a creative job but there was little scope or time to.get a placement suited to his aspirations. He loved the civil service placement though and is interested in an apprenticeship there now.

Ask your local MP. Doesn't matter which Party or whether you agree with their views. It's a real eye-opener for young people who have very little idea what politicians actually do.
