What time should a 16 yr old lad be in by when visiting a friend .

It depends.

10pm?

School night early. Weekend not so much.

Mine doesn't go out on a school night but on a weekend or holiday, he doesn't have a time to be home. I just ask that he lets me know where he is and when to expect him back.

If he is going to be out very late he normally sleeps at the friend's house and comes home the next day.

School night or not.
If they are otherwise getting enough sleep.
How they are getting home.
What they are doing.
How often you are talking about.
If it is for a specific reason or just 'hanging'
How much sleep they need / how good they are at 'pacing themselves'
etc. etc. etc
