I want to open a bank account for DD where she can put and access money she is getting from GM's will. So I don't want a savings account as I t's money she is free to spend if she wants. She already has a debit card (Osper). Any advice or ideas?

Dd has a young persons account with HSBC. She has a debit card & paying in Book and access to online banking.

All the banks offer child accounts. From age 11 they can have a current account with a debit card. Dd has hers with bank of Scotland

Thanks, it sounds simple then. When I googled it didn't seem so straightforward but I was using my phone so not always easy to investigate properly. I'm inclined towards Metrobank simply because I hate NatWest after many years of poor service and I suspect the other big high street banks will be much the same.

Ds(13) has an account with bank of Scotland too, he has a debit card he can use as normal at the atm/shops, also has Apple Pay.

His phone is paid for from his account, iTunes and Xbox points etc.

Think most banks do similar.

Dd went with Santander. The gave her a proper card you can use in shops to buy stuff. but you can only spend what is in your account. Some banks only give a cash machine card to teens. She can access it on her phone too. Now she is at Uni thay transferred into student account

My son has had a goHenry bank card since he was 10 it's great , I pay direct debit every week, the app let me set limits to were and how he can spend , also I get a text when he has used it , you can even set tasks on the app so he only gets his money if he completes them , I really would recommend it

Nope i wouldn't pay for something you can get for nothing

Migraleve · 10/09/2017 22:36

I wouldn't get a go Henry for a 14yo. Any bank will give a normal under 18 current account complete with debit card.

specialsubject · 11/09/2017 10:02

What dementedpixie said - money management rule no 1. Gohenry looks real sucker bait.

Orangeplastic · 11/09/2017 21:01

Wouldn't pay for GoHenry either. Dcs are with Lloyds and they have a Visa Debit, a phone banking app and Android pay - nothing else is needed !

My (14 year old) son had an Osper card and now has a Nationwide account.

Davros · 14/09/2017 10:24

Osper has worked well for DD as she didn't need a bank account. Now she does, I don't want to go to the main high street banks because we've had such terrible service over many years from NatWest and I think they're all the same. I will look at Nationwide and Metrobank to start with. Thanks everyone.
