he's 19, he's a great boy and doing really well

but he just doesnt talk much to me

I've just been for lunch with my friends who have daughters aged 18/19 and they said they are really close and talk to their mums all the time

It just makes me feel sad, I've lost my mum and I'd just love a good old chat and gossip with my kids but being boys they aren't really like this.

please dont tell me to get a hobby with them or spend time with them, I'm home all the time for them and I'm not taking up rugby....Grin...and yes I've watched from the sidelines every weekend for over ten years...

I sympathise. I have a 16 DS and we do talk but only when he is in the mood which is seldom. We tend to converse more by text tbh but that's usually because I'm trying to find out if he's hungry ... Not that I'm desperate but I'll try anything to try to strike up an exchange.. I think it's normal but it is hard to take at times. I share your pain OP. I think we just have to face that the teen years can be very short on conversation!!

Take him out for something to eat, just the two of you, and ban using the phone at the table. That's the only way I can have a good chat with ds.

Mine will talk in the car. I take him to his mates for pre drinks and he chooses the music and we talk about that or a topic usually ethical stuff. I don't ask questions about what he's up to or his mates as that's automatic shut down.
However if he's not in the mood to chat I've had it , which is quite often !!

We have a rule in our house about no phones at the table. So we all talk then.

I don't think it's a boy/girl thing. DS1 didn't talk to us from age 15 -18 but now at 21 is really talkative. Ds2 talked non bloody stop until he was about 17, he's now just turned 19 and sometimes is chatty and sometimes isn't.

I've got friends with daughters and their experience is similar. One of my close friends has 3 daughters, one is chatty the other two are either monosyllabic or do nothing but argue with her.

yes we chat in the car and I try not to ask too many questions....
