Teenagers and Social Media..

Is this the bane of everyone's life?? Has your teenager disengaged from family life? As single parent of two for 10 years, I am at my wits end, I have turned off all social media streams in the house - any one anyother suggestions?

How old are your two user? I would say screen time generally, not just social media as my two don't get too bogged down with that. Agree that they cause disengagement, you'll see my thread called constant screens about DS 17 yrs. I found that I really struggled from the age of about 12 to 13 yrs with my two but at least when they are younger you feel that you can more easily put a parental ban on things. I think you need to work out a time limit that feels appropriate and discuss the fact that they need to give their attention to other things.

Currently with DS 17yrs, nearly 18yrs I feel that he has to make his own decisions about what he does with his time, I can no longer dictate, the only proviso is that he is giving enough time to college work. Other than that I let him get on with it, I don't like the amount of time he spends on screens but it would make me too stressed to keep on about it. When I was 17/18 I made my own decisions about how to spend my time.

DD on the other hand is just 15yrs and I still feel able to say 'ok put that phone away now, or turn screens off now it's late/ near bedtime. Thankfully DD has the attitude that there is a lot of stupidity out there on SM and a lot of it doesn't impress her.

My ds 13 has just told me off for too much mning..
My teens are soap addicts also so no phones at tea time or TV time!!
Phones off before bed.

Mine are young adults now, but when still at school when they got home they could have phones for half an hour, then put in the hall until after dinner and homework when they could have them again for half an hour. Not allowed them upstairs at night.

They started to self regulate. Now they're adults I have no say in t'matter
