Daughter and holiday period

My 13 year old daughter is currently on her period and it looks like she will next be on either just before or while we are on holiday. (Not entirely sure when as even though she has been having periods the 2 years 4months she can go between 4 and 6 weeks ). She tried tampons a few months after starting her periods when she was 11 but couldn't get them in even with me sitting next to her offering advice she started crying and said it hurt. So I told her to leave it and hold onto the rest of the box in case she ever wanted to try again. She has never tried again and been happy with towels. But with holiday coming up I suggested to her that she try again now she is older as if she is on while we are away she won't be able to go swimming but she says she doesn't want to try again. I have heard about a pill you can take to delay period is it safe for such a young girl and are there any Side effects.

I've used it a few times. For me, the side-effect is a very heavy period a few days after I stop taking it.

Such a pain isn't it. My dr prescribed Norethisterone for my dd last year as her period was due during a school trip abroad. She was 13 and didn't experience any side effects.

Last year we went to Greece and my niece (then 14) was going to be on her period. She took the pills and they worked absolutely fine with no side effects. We were staying on a yacht and with all her siblings and cousins being able to swim we thought it was unfair that she wasn't

Thanks will take her to gp next week and see what they say have tried to talk to her about tampons again as I don't want her thinking she can take this pill every time but she refuses to give them another go. She just says if she can't swim then she will sit on the side. But as we where hoping to visit some water parks in the area it seems silly to me to pay entry for her into the water parks for her to just sit there getting board I also don't think she realises how hot it's going to be and a cool off in the pool will be just what she might need.

That pill may work or may not. Brutally, she has 35 years of periods and the option is tampon or no swim. Sorry, but thats how it is. Tampons don't hurt if used correctly and assuming there is no other problem.

specialsubject. Have you forgotten what it's like to be 13? There is still a lot of fear. Have a bit of sympathy will you? My daughter is the same- there are other options, it's not as cut and dried as
that.

I wouldn't even swim with a tampon in personally.

Get her the medicine to delay it.

I have just got this for my 12 year old dd who is due on when we are on holiday - at a resort with a water park!!

She will have to take it 3 days before she is due on in order for it to delay the start of her period. She can take it for a maximum of 10 days. The only problem is, she has only had about 6 periods and are 3-4 weeks apart so getting the timing right is going to be tricky! But I think we will go by her moods!

She has also tried a tampon, but says she "can't find the hole!" Grin Grin

I spent a lot of time at the beach as a youngster and when I got my periods at 13 wanted to use tampons so I could carry on doing so. My mum was against it for ages as 'girls' don't. (I think she thought once I put a tampon 'up there' a penis would just find its way up there too! Hmm). Anyway, I just could NOT get one in despite trying everything various angles on the loo, foot on the bath, other foot on the bath, even lying down. I tried lube as well. I simply could not get one in. My mum made helpful suggestions (see above) and one day I was so stressed out I even asked her to do it. Thank fuck she declined as the residual trauma would have been to much to cope with 😁

I tried on & off and I guess eventually succeeded though I don't remember it.

I STILL STRUGGLE with them sometimes. I need my period to be heavy enough or it's too dry & I can't insert one. Sometimes I have more 'luck' lying on my side on the bed.

(Though I'm pleased to report it's not a problem with a penis 😁)

WRT swimming, for many years I'd happily swim with a tampon in, but I can't anymore as I'd either turn the pool/sea red or end up with pool/sea water up my fanjo. Neither of those options appeal!

My dates are no longer regular, but I think I'm going to try the tablets for my holiday later in the year (sea/pool parks).

Pasanda thankyou am taking her to doctors later this week we have the same problem although daughter has been having periods for over two years she can go 4 to 6 weeks between periods but more commonly goes about 5 so will have to guess the same as you.

Extrahot I remember being determined to use tampons as didn't like towels and spending ages trying but eventually getting it and have always used them since but obviously like you have said not everyone finds them easy to get on with. And I have to admit if I am due on whenever we go on holiday I will carry on taking my pill without a break so I don't come on .

I am a midwife and we have an extremely close relationship and can talk about these things easily. And those were her words - at the moment, she 'can't find the hole'.

I am in no doubt that with time she will eventually do so...

My dd takes the tablets every year. This year she had taken them for 3 weeks.

There's been no side effects and they are effective.

I know the conventional advice is applicator tampons are easier than non-applicator but personally I can't get on with applicators at all and find lilets much easier. I only use them for swimming on holiday.

My daughter used them for swimming only when she was 11,I got her some mini ones.
She persuaded me to show her the hole,I managed to show her in a matter of fact way(didn't realised I had signed up for this).She wouldn't dream of asking for. this kind of help now but copes with her periods without drama.

My daughter had similar feelings and experiences about using tampons and managing to insert them at that age but she has now overcome them because of swimming. She does now think tampons are much less messy and more convenient generally (which I do too). I didn't really know about drugs but she's now able to use them and happy to do so when there's a need. I would have no hesitation about swimming with a tampon - you just need to change it afterwards.
