What age do you let them start wearing make up?

Posting in teens as I feel mums with teens will have had experience with this.

My 12 year old daughter has asked me today whilst out shopping if she could buy some make up with her pocket money and said she wants to start wearing make up.

Told her I'd think about it and take her out another day if I decide she is old enough. i just feel like she is still so young.

My daughter started wearing make up properly the summer after year 7 so she was about 12 too. She never really asked me, she just did it and it became normal to see her wearing it haha.

When she was young she was really into my make up and would often play with it so I sorted her out some that I didn't use to mess around with and she just used that to start with. Maybe you could do this for your daughter if you have make up? She didn't actually buy make up of her own until she was about 14/15.

My 10 year old is messing around with it. Nothing too heavy. Looks quite pretty

She has her own which she's bought with her pocket money, as there was no way she was experimenting with my very limited but for me expensive selection.

DD is coming to the end of Y7, she is nearly 12. She is allowed to wear nail varnish (school holidays only) and lip gloss (weekends & holidays) but often chooses to go without either. She hasn't asked about any other make-up yet, although I know that some of her friends wear it outside school.

Been wearing make up from year 7. Wouldn't dream of interfering with her choices for her own face. Luckily she gets it right 90% of the time. If she looks silly/too grown up, I tell her. She takes off/makes changes. It's about becoming responsible for your own choices. A slow process from around 11 (or when the pre teen wants to start making independent choices).. imho much better then proscribing every aspect of their lives until the magic age of 16 when overnight they are suddenly 'allowed' to do be young adults.

Mine started at around 12.5. She woke up one day wanting to wear it & got much more interested in her appearance. She tends to just wear Concealer and mascara though at nearly 14!!

Oh, and varnish too.

She's been wearing nail vanish and little "toy" make up sets for years, was just a bit surprised when she wanted to start using proper make up!

You could go for a clear mascara and a nude coloured lipstick and maybe a tinted moisturiser to start with - both my teens (now 14&19) started very similar age to your daughter - they are both fab at putting makeup on and never look over-done
