Hostels - age limits?

DC is looking at a couple of days away to London with 7 friends. 4 will be 18 and 4 will be 17. Looking at hostels, they can get an 8 bed dorm (so not sharing with anyone else) but it stipulates that under 18s can only go in the private rooms and not dorms. Does anyone know if they actually check for proof of age when they check in?

Stratford checked. Don't know if that's the norm x

Thanks Clara - that's what I was worried about!

I wonder if they are filling a dorm whether it could count as a private room??? Seems a bit daft really. Would it be worth contacting the hostel?

Check with the hostel. I bet because they're using a whole dorm it'll be fine.

DS also looking. There are some, eg Venture Hostel and Baden Powell House that allow them to stay from 16.

Sue - it was Baden Powell hostel that they could get a dorm for 8 - but it says no under 18s in the dorms.
I think I will get DC to call them tomorrow as they are hoping to book it tomorrow

I think at Baden Powell they have to book a private room if they're 17, but they can go.
If you go on bookings.com you can search for a hostel room and state how many adults and how many children. I just did it with 3 adults and 3 children all aged 17 and it came up with a whole list of options.

Thanks Sue!
