Can you love your DC intensely but actually not like them very much? I just overheard a conversation about this and its making me think.

OP posts:

In my household, with 2 teens... yes, I can and often do dislike their behaviour / them Sad But it's only momentary, and the maternal instinct and love kick in fairly quickly after a g & t

I don't think OP means not liking them momentarily but in general, am I right? I remember having that exact same conversation with someone a few years ago who told me that although she loved her DC, she did not like her and couldn't find a single thing she liked about her. I thought that was really sad and harsh at the time but I hate to admit it but I am not far from there myself just lately :(

Yes I believe you can. Sad

Feeling like that is not unusual for parents during the teen wilderness. I can assure you it does pass and when your teen emerges as a fully functioning adult, all feelings of liking them will be restored Smile, ime at least.

Yes it is possible. In fact I think it's probably nature at work, in the same way teenagers "hate" their parents. With me I then feel guilty for feeling that way, even though I love all my DC with all my heart. But the disruption to the house that a teenager causes can make you dislike the teenager, and hope that they grow out of it soon and become your friend again.

I know it's possible to love but temporarily not like your teens. I've also been the teenager whose DM told her she loved but didn't like her. It was devastating, especially since love wasn't openly expressed in our home. Think it, feel it but fgs don't share it Grin
