teenagers - part time jobs and tax

DS has just started a casual (zero hours type) job for a few weeks in the summer holidays to earn some money before going to Uni.
He has had to give his NI number to employer. He will only be working about 10 -15 hours a week at NMW until he goes away in Sept and possibly get some more hours when he is home at Christmas.
This is the 1st proper job he has had - in previous summers he has done some casual 'cash in hand' work for someone we know.
Will he have tax deducted from the pay he receives from his current job and if so when/how does he go about claiming it back?

I've just had this when I was at work before maternity leave, I make below the threshold but was being taxed. I got a Rebate a few weeks ago

There used to be a form you filled in declaring you were studying, not sure if it's the same now though

In theory you don't need to claim, he will get an automatic rebate, I did twice in his position. Just got an unexpected cheque in the post. Great way to save up without the effort!!

There are now no automatic exemptions for students under RTI

He needs to fill in a P46 & tick the box to say it is his only job since 5th April. He will then only be taxed if he reaches the personal allowance limit. Tax is cumulative so they will take into account that he hadn't earnt anything so far this tax year & still has his allowance from April til now.

national insurance however isn't cumulative so if he earns above the Lower Earnings Level in any pay period he may have NI deducted.

RTI also means that if he is overtaxed for example he is put into an emergency or Week 1 tax code if the P46 hasn't been processed once the cirrect code is allocated he will receive the overpaid tax in his next pay.

DS1 (16) has just had his first pay from his P/T job. he's been put on Emergency tax code and paid tax. He tried to call HMRC but gave up after 30 minutes on hold.

He's written them a letter.

Has he filled in a P46 sparkling? He needs to give that to his employer. Also ask him to check what declaration they have ticked on their payroll software. It sounds like they have ticked the wrong box.

Will do ballet. He is quite shy and a bit reticent about asking questions. Where would he get a P46 from?

And it is really really worth waiting it out on the phone. 10 years bitter experience in payroll has taught me that a letter may be auctioned in 4-12 weeks if you are lucky.

The thing is he paid £18 tax. The phone call was 30 minutes at 9.5p a minute so felt we had to give up.

Technically speaking it's now just a "Starter Checklist" which has replaced the paper p46 they have to tick but so many people get it wrong I find it easier to use the old form.

One if my colleagues was in the phone to them last week for 20 mins about chsnging his code due to a new company car - but he used the work phone line!

You see if I had my way i would go in and talk to DS's employer and sort it, but he's 16 and needs to sort it out himself.

My son has worked part time in Next for a year. He was taxed but we thought it would sort itself out at end of tax year. It didn't. It carried on in spite of form filling and letters from both him and Next! I finally phoned hmrc two weeks ago and held on for 20mins. He got notice yesterday that he is getting £303 rebate from.last year! In his August pay he should get £550 ish rebate for this year plus no tax deduction in his pay! He's a happy bunny!!

Is there a good/better time to phone HMRC? He tried at 6.30 on Friday evening. they said it would be 20 mins but 30 mins later no joy.

I think I am due a tax rebate but have given up trying to phone HMRC. It's costing me more on the phone than I'll get back!

HMRC are still using 0845 numbers, but they are included in some landline packages.

or try saynoto0870 for geographic alternatives.

The one that's on DS1's payslip is an 0333 number.

DH got a tax rebate last week , they seem to send them out anytime from May to October. A lot of mobile contracts include the 03 numbers like HMRC in the free minutes so that is worth checking for phoning them. DS always seemed to pay tax as a student whatever forms he filled in and just ended up having to wait for a rebate which was a bit of a pain, once they owed him over £1000

It's a bit shit when you are 16 and you have just got your very first proper pay of £90 to find that HMRC have snaffled £18 of it. Especially when you get paid monthly.

I will check everyone's mobile contracts Miracle. Between us we have EE, Three, and Tesco Mobile.
