closing the kitchen at night time!?

ive put a ban on entry into MY kitchen after 7.30pm. my ds says "youre out of order NO ONE else does that"!!

ds aged 12 has tea at 5pm, a large tea i hasten to add!

then up till 8.30 at night hes in/out of kitchen which is walkthrough living room and it really pisses me off, the cold comes in through the kitchen door, he takes loads of food upstairs and too be honest hes costing me a fortune.

ive told him from tonight i will make cheese sarnies and leave in the fridge and that after 7.30 hes not allowed in there, hes goes to bed at 9.

im hoping that theres others out there do the same so i can show him hes not the only one. god, i hope im not the only one

Depends on their age. As they got older I was happy with them being up, if not at school next day as late as they chose in their rooms so cooking at 3am is not unusual in this house. But you pick practices which suit your family, don't you? My older 3 all at university now all cook well for themselves and I think open access to the kitchen did help them on that score.

12 is quite little, though. We dont' have any foods in the house like biscuits and crisps and sweets usually so if they come in the kitchen they can get stuff like fruit, bread, cheese, soup, but nothing more exciting than that. That helps until they pass their driving test and discover the 24/7 Tesco I suppose.

xena,cooking at 3am, you arekidding, i would be worried sick that they left the cooker/grill on and would burn the house down.

praps i should get him one of those little fridges for xmas for his room and stock it up for him

It sounds like a fantastic idea, but I have to say that my 10 year old DS just couldn't cope. He's incredibly energetic and always rushing around climbing trees, riding horses or bikes, jumping around in the garden etc. He eats something for tea when he gets in from school, has supper at 6.30pm-ish with us all, and then grazes pretty much constantly until 9pm. Very often I'll hear him after that muttering about still being hungry. But funnily enough I become 'deaf' after 9pm and he soon goes to sleep.

He eats a huge amount of fruit, salad, cheese, etc but given half a chance would also eat loads of crap all evening. He's got a thin and muscular body so I'm not worried on that front. As you say, it's the cost! And the constant shopping!

My kids (7, 10 and 12) eat between 5 and 6.30, depending on whether one or other has been to an activity.

They never ask for food after they've eaten.

They have a drink and as much fruit as they like before their main meal, though.

It's an age thing. at 12 I don't think they cooked alone at 3am. It would be when they were old enough to get home after being out and then it's normal for teenage girls to eat. I think it soaks up the alcohol and nocturnal older teenagers tend to come and go but families differ. I'm quite libertarian.

I am happy gor my teens to help themselvs to snacks during the evening as long as they tidy up and let me know what they have eaten. I don't think they would be very happy if I banned them from the kitchen after 7.30. My 16 year old often makes herself a sandwhich at about 9.30.

My 13 and 11 year old are always atarving later on int he evening, and they don't get their evening meal until 6/6.30 pm depending on which day it is. If he is getting tea at 5 pm then i'm not surprised he's hungry again before bedtime.
We only have fruit/bread/pittas/cereal though type of struff on offer after tea though.
Does cost a fortune but at this age they are grwoing loads - my just 13 yo has put on about 6 in height in 6 months.

If I shut the kitchen at 7:30 (much as I'd like to) I'd have a riot on my hands. The best I can hope for is to say that whatever they want they have to get for themselves and clear up afterwards.

right ive taken note of all your messages andtoday i went out and bought loads of fruit,loads of milk and lots of those little boxes of cereals, bread and more cheese!

mumeee when hes 16 he'll be up later so presume he'll be stuffing his face at 10pmnot lookding forward to it though

My son has mighty great bowls of cereal in the evening...just wish he would remember to put the milk back in the bloody fridgeand loshad agree about the growing thing I'm sure hes grown 12 inches in the last year

I told my dd (2yrs 10mths) that the kitchen was shut as she would eat her dinner, but wanted something else.

She went to look and came back and said no its not door open.

She didn't get anything so had to eat her dinner.

I have a 14,13 and 12 yr old and they eat tea between 5 and 6, then at 8 they can have a sandwiche or fruit, but on a friday and saturday they can eat rubbish but a small amount although they would eat it from first thing until last thing given the choice.
