First Bra, Starter Bra do's and don'ts

Hi my dd is talking about wanting a bra. She is shy about going to the shops. I am concerned i won't get the right thing.What sort of first bra's is the "in" thing? I know she wants padding as she is shy about her nipples but am not sure about designs. What is popular? Where is best to go?

I know Bravissimo are know for big bras but they are actually good for small backs too and will give you the right size unlike M&S.
I'd also say go for a nude coloured bra if she has to wear a white or very light coloured shirt for school as a white bra under a white shirt just shows up so much which is not what you want when you start wearing a bra (or as an adult). Also no underwire, she won't need it and its not good for developing breast tissue.

M&S Angel, can she ask her friends what they have or like?

Don't let her get measured up in M&S. They will have her in a back size which will be too big for her frame.

You don't say if she actually has breasts of size, or if she's just thinking about it cos others do or she has prominent nipples ( breast development starting with nipple prominence is just sooooo embarrassing for girls so I can totally see why they want to cover up)

Just fancying a bra/ nipple cover is fine and valid and can be easily satisfied with some shaped foam bras from primark or m&s. Don't get sucked into the " padded bras for kids" daily mail alarmism , the moulded foam cups are liked as the cover up well, protect sensitive nipples and even up early boobs that may be odd sizes.

Bravissimo is a great start if she's got breasts that look like they are " breast like" iyswim ie needing a cup with volume. The bra intervention threads have shown me that most boobs that " need" a bra are usually D cup or more - however many B cups m&s tries to put them in! I have a DC who was a bravissimo girl at 10.

Bravissimo will also be sensitive if she isn't a size they can fit. M&s are not!

As for no underwire - yes in theory, but if you have boobs of a size to warrant a wire, get them well fitted and wear them. Age is irrelevant.

I took my DD to M&S and we got her 4 padded 'starter' bras from the Angel range. The non-padded are horrible and padded give some shape and hide the nipples. They shoudl advise in the shop - they seem to fit her fine tbh. She was measured as a 30 round the back - I can't remember the cup size as she has cut out the labels.

You can measure her yourself & try on the bras without M&S staff offering opinions. It's not rocket science. They like getting same type of bras as their friends have.
