double bed for teens

My DS is 16 and I've just ordered him a double bed... my parents have gone spare saying he doesn't need one and that they wouldn't have entertained the idea of getting me one when I was that age... 35 years ago

Could you let me know if your teen has a double bed as they've made me feel like I've lost the plot. ... although DS is chuffed to bits...

Its nothing to so with them though!

Bowlersarm · 16/09/2014 18:28

Yes ds1 was 16, ds2 was 15, and ds3 is 14 and will probably have one at 15.

My mum didn't understand either!

It's much more of a faff laundering double bedding for three beds now on a weekly basis though. Lots of ironing.

MrsSpencerReid · 16/09/2014 18:28

My two year old has a double bed!! (Because we evict him when my parents come to stay)

Oakmaiden · 16/09/2014 18:32

My 16 year old has a double bed - but we didn't really buy it for him, we bought it so that we have somewhere comfortable for adult guests to sleep, and put it in his room. He is expected to vacate his room for guests.

TheFairyCaravan · 16/09/2014 18:32

Yes DS2(17) had one at 15 because he was too tall for a single so he sleeps diagonally across the double.

DS1 doesn't because he doesn't have room for one and all his fitness kit and weight bench. He doesn't live here full time now, anyway.

AnguaResurgam · 16/09/2014 18:35

No, but they might do if we were replacing beds.

DNiece and DNeph both had doubles from early teen years. Didn't seem to make either of them promiscuous.

headlesslambrini · 16/09/2014 18:35

my 15 yr old has one, he's 6ft and sleeps across it, I think he still has some growing still to do as well.

I came onto this thread because I am just about to re-do DD's room, she is 12 and we will be looking for a small double bed for her, a 4ft one, if I can find one.

chocolatespiders · 16/09/2014 18:36

Dd got hers at 14 she loves it although I wish we ordered a small double as it takes up a lot of room in her bedroom.

Bonsoir · 16/09/2014 18:37

I wouldn't want the extra laundry tbh.

OwlCapone · 16/09/2014 18:39

DS1 has one. It's no more laundry than before.

Fuchsteufel · 16/09/2014 18:39

My 10 yo has one. We are in the process of downsizing and she now has the lovely iron bed company bed I coveted and saved for in yesteryear. Her cabin bed is up for sale (when I get round to it) and DH and I bought a bigger bed. I like going in there for snuggles - though she is getting less keen :(

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 16/09/2014 18:40

Have you asked them outright what their beef is with ds having a double bed?

choochoomcgrew · 16/09/2014 18:41

When my bf moved in, we had his bed but mine was still fairly new - so it went to DS 14 as it was far too good to get rid.
Absolutely no prob at all in my eyes?!!!

TheFairyCaravan · 16/09/2014 18:41

It is that much extra laundry, Bonsoir, only 2 pillowcases. My kids have had double duvets on single beds for years, we always go up a size in bedding.

everynameisbloodytaken · 16/09/2014 18:46

I agree GLBC... they do like to have their say. .. they live almost next door and it would be hard to smuggle a double bed in without their knowledge.

Both my dds (age 8 & 10) have double beds. Dd1 because her room is huge and it looks proportionately better in there (and actually wasn't much more expensive than a single) and dd2 has one because her room is quite small but her bed has masses of drawer storage underneath. Her room looks bigger and tidier now than it did with a single bed and crap lying about everywhere!

I also reasoned, when we upgraded their beds this year, that as I hope they'll last for the next ten years, that they will probably need them as teenagers; dh and I are both v tall!

There's certainly no question of them being used to house boyfriends too one day - as you can see by my explanations above they were bought for other reasons!

chocolatespiders · 16/09/2014 18:50

Headless there is loads of small doubles available I am thinking of getting dd an ottomon style one to store clutter under!

chocolatespiders · 16/09/2014 18:52

Like someone said a bed is for 10 years so it will last him into his twenties... See if they do middle of the night deliveries!

bigTillyMint · 16/09/2014 18:53

DD got a small double when she turned 15 as we were doing her room up and we could fit it in (a normal sized one would have been just too big).
I don't find it much more washing than a single bed - they are both just a loadConfused

DS will probably get one next summer when he will be 14 1/2 as we will do his room next. His will probably be a full-sized one as his room is bigger and he is twice the height of DD already!

I didn't get a double bed till I moved to London and started working. It didn't stop meWink

LavaDragonflies · 16/09/2014 18:54

No, but my eldest doesn't want one. My youngest will probably have one at some point because at age 10 is already over 5 foot.

WiseKneeHair · 16/09/2014 18:55

My DS12 has had a double for 4 years and DS10 has just got one. Both old beds of ours and PILs, so not bought specifically.
I didn't realise it was such a contentious issue!

MissMillament · 16/09/2014 18:56

All my DCs have double beds - two of them are small (four foot) doubles and one is a 5ft. Much more practical imo, as it means rooms can double up as guest rooms. I don't get why anyone would object, frankly. Teens use their beds as hanging out places and like the room to sprawl out.

Idontseeanysontarans · 16/09/2014 18:57

Not yet but when mine outgrow their cabin beds we'll probably get them doubles - it'll save them buying their own when they move out!

MirandaWest · 16/09/2014 18:59

I had a 4 foot double from when I was about 7 I think. I'll get my DC double beds at some point - more room to spread out and if either of them do want to have a boyfriend or girlfriend stay the night when they're older it feels a bit more friendly for them to stay in a double bed than squashed in a single one.

Isthiscorrect · 16/09/2014 19:02

We moved countries when ds was 10, and we sold his cabin bed. So when we arrived he got a double bed. We spent many a happy hour reading together. He has on occasion been evicted for visitors but we also have a guest room, so not often. Don't see the problem really.
