double bed for teens

My DS is 16 and I've just ordered him a double bed... my parents have gone spare saying he doesn't need one and that they wouldn't have entertained the idea of getting me one when I was that age... 35 years ago

Could you let me know if your teen has a double bed as they've made me feel like I've lost the plot. ... although DS is chuffed to bits...

My DD(17) has a double bed now, and I know my parents (if still with us) would have been a bit sniffy about it! I think it's a bit "double beds are for 2 people so who's going to join them" attitude - ridiculous, I know!
I did wonder what to do with pillows though; DD likes two, which seemed lost on a double, and four was a bit of a waste, so ended up getting a bolster-style pillow and case which looks great topped with a pillow at the centre. (It also makes it look like a one-person bed IYKWIM?)Grin

I have six feet tall children and they have small doubles. If their bedrooms were bigger they'd have king size.
What a weird thing for your parents to moan about.

Musicaltheatremum · 16/09/2014 21:14

Just about to get my 2 double beds. They are long children and will be useful for guests

Goldenlab · 16/09/2014 21:20

All of our bedrooms here have double beds in them. There's nothing odd about it.

Asteria · 16/09/2014 21:24

DS12 and DSD8 both have them - although they weren't specifically bought for them. DSS 6 has a built-in captains type bunk as his room is quite small (he prefers to sleep in the cupboard underneath!). It makes life far easier when people come to stay - the DC's are happy to bunk in together if relations/friends need their beds and if they have their friends to sleep over then they just pile in together. Much easier than having to make up extra beds. Grin

DD has a double bed, has always had (also for visitors).

I have never told her it's the one my grandmother kindly bought DH and me, so we didn't have to share my old single at my parents.

I honestly cannot remember if we had it before or after we were married.

DH and I shared a bed on our first date and got engaged after 6 weeks, everyone except DHs very elderly DF, treated as if we were married for the two years we weren't.

I'm certain FIL knew we slept together, he just didn't take his ancient hips up the very steep stairs to see what beds were made up. DMIL knew, she made up the beds.

duhgldiuhfdsli · 16/09/2014 22:45

my parents have gone spare

Serves you right for discussing furniture purchases with them.

myotherusernameisbetter · 16/09/2014 22:51

both my teens have them DS1 got one for his 13th birthday as that was all he wanted (he had bunk beds in his room) and DS2 got one by default at age 12 when we moved him from his tiny room to the official "spare room" as it seemed pointless keeping a larger room and bed for the occasional visitor whilst he was struggling for space. Both boys were and are large adult sized and were in beds designed for children really so they would have needed something more solid regardless. They actually have Ikea doubles which are almost King sized as they are bigger than a double and as long as a King which they need for their height.

Laundry is fine as you would struggle to get more than one full set of bedding for a single in the machine at a time anyway so doing one double at time isn't much more work.

Floralnomad · 16/09/2014 22:56

My DS has had a double since he was about 10 and my daughter has a king size which we got when she was about 8 , they were bought specifically for them ,not for use by visitors . If they have large enough bedrooms I can't see why it would seem odd .

MrsCharlesBrandon · 16/09/2014 22:59

We are getting DD1 (10.9) a double at Christmas. she is fully aware that we will expect her to vacate for guests though!

DD2 and DS have captains beds as they have smaller rooms.

Redglitter · 16/09/2014 23:00

My niece had a double bed at 3 because she got moved out the nursery and the cot bed into what was the spare room. There was a double bed in there and since it was such a big room my brother and sil thought buying a single bed for her and getting rid of the double bed was daft

slithytove · 16/09/2014 23:02

I had one from 14 onwards, think my sister was 11.

If you have the space it's a pretty normal thing to do isn't it?

everynameisbloodytaken · 16/09/2014 23:08

Thank you for all your replies. it seems it's perfectly acceptable for DS to have a double bed. I actually hadn't thought about the idea of him having a girl friend to stay over... oh well... maybe that's what my parents are worried about. ..

Considering getting my 16 year old one, as her bed needs replacing. And it will be useful as a spare guest bed when she leaves home, if ever...

DS14 at over 6 foot tall is crammed into his single bed but likes it because he says it is cozy !

nipersvest · 17/09/2014 12:08

dd is 12 and has a double bed. its actually a triple sleeper, as in bunk beds with a double on the bottom and single up top, so she has a choice of where to sleep, its been great for sleepovers too.

secretsquirrels · 17/09/2014 15:43

Mine both got double beds around 10/11 as we replaced old beds. In hindsight I would never have bought them single beds, I would have gone straight from cot to double bed.
I was posted this on a thread asking about "first bed". I got Shock reactions. Can't understand why?
It would have save lots of musical beds when DC were younger.

Oh and the 18 year old has had his GF stay over Wink.

ConsiderablyBiggerBuns · 17/09/2014 15:48

My DD had a double bed at 12. Partly because she has difficulty sleeping and sharing with the dog helped, partly because she gets turfed out of her room when visitors come to stay and partly because a double bed is nice and there was room. Sounds like your parents are equating a double bed with sex which is just ridiculous.

CiderwithBuda · 17/09/2014 15:51

Tell your parents to keep their dirty minds to themselves!

My DS has a kingsize bed. Has had since he was about 7! Mainly because he kept coming in to my bed and one of his reasons was that his bed was too small. So we bought a bigger bed.

FannyFifer · 17/09/2014 15:52

My children have both had double beds from when they first went into a bed.

Dumbledoresgirl · 17/09/2014 15:57

It's not the bed that lasts 10 years. Dh and I sleep on a bed over 100 years old! It's the mattress that needs changing after 10 years.

That aside, no my teens don't have double beds, not even ds1 who is well over 6 feet tall. It wouldn't occur to me to buy double beds for children. But, if you want to do it - for whatever reason - I can't see that it has anything to do with your parents!

Takver · 17/09/2014 16:04

I had a double bed all through my childhood because it was what my parents had I outgrew my cot. I finally got a (brand new) single bed when I was 13 as a Christmas present . . . still remember the luxury of floorspace Grin

Hugglepuff · 17/09/2014 18:26

My ds is 13 and 6 ft.
He is much more comfortable sleeping diagonally across a small double.

nooka · 20/09/2014 03:34

My dd is 14 and has a double, ds is 15 and still has the bunks we bought for them when they were toddlers. I'd expected dd to have the other bunk until she left home (they break down) but dh and me bought a new bigger bed and she wanted our old double. ds is 6ft+ but prefers his bunk (plus if we put a double in his room there wodul not be much room for anything else!)

TrickoftheMind · 20/09/2014 03:54

I was 23 when I was looking at buying my first house. My mum pulled a cats bum face when my response to her comment about there being plenty of room for a single bed was that I would be buying a double Confused.

Some folk have weird ideas. Smile and nod, then carry on however suits you.

(I'm not understanding the quantity of laundry issue either, that's nonsense).

GnomeDePlume · 20/09/2014 21:40

everynameisbloodytaken tell your parents that you bought your DS a double bed not a girlfriend to go in it.

DD1(19) has just gone to uni and DD2(15) is very happy to have inherited her double bed.
