Nearly 18 job problems

Hi DS is doing A levels expected to get good results and hopefully off to Uni in September. Trying to get temp work in chosen field but all state over 18 only is it worth him ringing to check as hes done exactly the same work as all the others in his year group and expected to get better results than most. However he will have no actual expierience as not 18 until late August or is he stuck at the supermarket he currently works at all summer.
I understand 18 means 18 but living in hope

I guess it depends on the field - is the issue a dangerous environment or a responsibility thing or something else?
Would he be able to ring or e-mail, asking about voluntary work experience if he can't get the temporary work? It would at least show he was keen, and they might be able to sort something if they see he is a responsible sort?
