If your 15 year old DD shaved off all her pubic hair, what would your thoughts be?

This isn't about my DDs as they are slightly younger, but a friends DD and I'm interested as it won't be long until I'm having worrying teenage ishoos!

She has a boyfriend, quite a new relationship, same age, and my initial reaction was ..... he has watched too much porn and expects this from girls. Friend thinks it is all still quite innocent and this is her preference for her body rather than any pressure.

Thoughts please.

Hardly any of the choices we make are what we want. We're all socially conditioned into doing something. Wearing deodrant, makeup, washing our hair, buying certain foods, having certain opinions... we can argue that it's what we want but there is always conditioning at play which is why it confuses me as to why pubic hair is one of the few things people scream about.

I dislike how people disregard someone's personal choice, we may be conditioned but we choose to give in to those conditions.

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 05/01/2014 20:18

fairylea beat me to it.

SPsFifthConyoIsTheBestConyo · 05/01/2014 20:19

I shaved mine off at that age. It was my choice. Nothing to do with boys.

Not everything revolves around males and their expectations. I still remove it now and again now. Nothing to do with porn or what men want. Though if I was with someone who voiced he preferred I would do it no problem.

Back2Basics · 05/01/2014 20:38

No Iam was on about what billy said.

Fairy beat me to the reply I would have replied to you billy

BillyBanter · 05/01/2014 20:49

Because it's a backward step in social norms for women. IMO. Like saying getting a boob job and twerking is girl power. Woop woop.

PortofinoRevisited · 05/01/2014 20:50

Girls watch porn too? The girl in question in the OP is 15! I find this a bit scary - and SP you are quite young aren't you iirc. And you would change your body if a man preferred it?

BillyBanter · 05/01/2014 20:51

You think 15 year old girls have never been curious enough to watch porn?

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 05/01/2014 20:53

porto I watched porn at 15.

Why is it accepted that boys at that age do, but not girls

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 05/01/2014 20:53

billy well, with that in mind don't you think one way we combat social norms is by owning them? By making them our own?

PortofinoRevisited · 05/01/2014 20:53

Of course it is to do with boys. Getting over the fact that everyone has pubic hair - well yes cultural norms say that we don't have it hanging out of our swimsuit - so you trim or wax and that is a whole other argument. But to shave it all off? What is that about?

Back2Basics · 05/01/2014 20:57

It's not like getting a boob job, don't be ridiculous you cannot compare shaving hair to major surgery.

It's no different then getting a nice hair cut or painting your nails if that's what makes you feel nice.

I really fail to see the difference of different shaved body parts. Why is it acceptable to shave under your arms but not your pubis?

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 05/01/2014 20:57

portofino just because you can't see why doesn't mean the people doing it can't. I do it personally because I like the way it feels. DP prefers hair, I prefer no hair so I shave it all. It's not an alien way of thinking.

BillyBanter · 05/01/2014 21:00

DoYou. What does that even mean? Grin

I'm comparing the attitudes.

I always shaved my legs and underarms. I prefer it. I think hairy legs looks horrible on women. But I recognise that this is my social conditioning. I think a foward step for women would be not feeling we have to shave our legs, knowing they are perfectly fine as they are. Adding another area to that is not a forward step in my view.

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 05/01/2014 21:03

billy

But what if women like shaving their legs. Surely if we abstain from doing so just because we want to combat social norms is a step backward?

By 'owning' it I mean making it perfectly clear that we do it because we want to. Not because we can't possibly go against what society is telling us is 'right'.

I think we belittle women by saying things like 'women need to know they don't have to and they're perfectly fine'. I think a lot of women do.

SPsFifthConyoIsTheBestConyo · 05/01/2014 21:07

Port I'm 23. I shave now and again when can be arsed. If a man I was seeing mentioned he preferred then I would do it more often. Why not? Such as if I mentioned I don't like a bearded face he would shave that.

It is ok to do things for yourself and for your partner.

SPsFifthConyoIsTheBestConyo · 05/01/2014 21:09

Just the same as if he mentioned he liked hair then I wouldn't shave as much.

I see nothing wrong with that.

BillyBanter · 05/01/2014 21:11

But why do we 'want to'? Why did women in the 70s and 80s rarely 'want to' but women from the mid 90s forward 'want to' more often?

SPsFifthConyoIsTheBestConyo · 05/01/2014 21:12

Why do people care what condition other women's pubic regions are in?!

You could have Peter Andre shaved in to you pubes I couldn't give a shiny shit.

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 05/01/2014 21:18

billybanter Well firstly it's not exactly a modern thing. The ancient egyptians did it, as have many other cultures over the years.

I don't know why we want to but I know why I want to. Because it feels better. Loads better. I can't talk for every other woman though.

nessus · 05/01/2014 21:18

*If your 15 year old DD shaved off all her pubic hair, what would your thoughts be?"

She is going to be feeling the itch for at least a week so must not snigger when she is rubbing thighs together whilst doing dishes!

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 05/01/2014 21:18

Agree SP I honestly don't know why people object to it so much. They could do it because tiny green men told them to and I wouldn't be arsed.

Of course is not an Alien way of thinking, But who decided women should have no body hair. It is a totally natural thing after all. No-one decided men should shave all theirs off.

PortofinoRevisited · 05/01/2014 21:33

It is fine to do it - but at least think a mo, and understand why you do it. Is that too much to ask?

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 05/01/2014 21:37

portofino Don't you realise how patronising that comment is though, you have no idea if they've considered it, and actually you have no idea if they'd do it if pubic hair was still 'in'.

Just because some people don't bang on about social learning, norms and conditioning doesn't mean they're oblivious to it. Some people would just rather get on with what they're doing rather than justifying it.
