DD split coke on family Ipad

That's it basically.Now she says sound is intermittant, almost gone.Can I get it fixed? Obviously not under warrenty.So disappointed in her, my husband doesn't know , will go apesh*t as already thinks she is cackhanded , I'm just tired of her, how she doesn't look after things.She's crying in her room not sure why.How would I try to go about getting it fixed?Can it be fixed or do we have to write it off?

So she's clumsy? So what? Accident happen, I'm sure she didn't mean to spill coke.

I'd be pissed off about the iPad, but not letting my child break her heart crying in this way.

Try putting it in a baking try, then fill it with rice (covering the iPad in rice). The idea is the rice draws out any moisture stuck in the machine. Leave it there for 24 hours then see if that's helped.

And to be honest....your daughter is probably crying because you're being nasty to her! Accidents happen, it's silly to be disappointed / angry with her.

No, she's crying because we let her use it and she's done this.I know it wasn't deliberate but she still needs to learn to be more careful.She knows how to look after things, if it were solely hers I'm sure she would take better care but we can't afford for her to have her own just yet.Her brother had all his games on there , he is 3 yrs younger and looks after things better.She has a history of technology misuse, she took her blackberry into the bathroom when she was showering making the warrenty void, she didn't know that.She chipped and scratched all of the casing, even with covers.She just thinks things can be replaced but it's not that easy, even if it were I wouldn't be rushing to replace/upgrade like her friends mums appear to be.Sorry I'm just really annoyed, her dad will blame me as I trust her, I'm the one always saying she has changed, she appreciates the value of things etc.We have spoken since she's ok.

O'h and I'm sorry if this seems trivial in the light of some of the real problems on here.I didn't know where to put this but I did want some advice as I thought someone may have encountered this.

I'd be livid too. We couldn't afford an ipad but if we managed to buy one and dd ruined it I'd be cross too! And unfair on other dcs who lose their games etc too.

That said, I think the other posts are correct - that it was an accident not deliberate so you shouldn't blame. In reality it is hard not to feel upset that that much money is down the drain through carelessness (plus the loss of time in anything on the ipad you can't get back eg stuff not backed up elsewhere). So - be cross, upset - just preferably on here, not at your dd as she seems to have realised that she should have taken greater care.

I do speak though as someone who has spilled more than one cup of tea on my (cheap) laptop and (cheaper) desktop keyboard - both of which did survive. So shouldn't really criticise others for carelessness... In fact, thinking about it, the ipad may be fine when it has fully dried out - that may just take a few days to do, properly, though. Then again, coke is obviously stickier, so may gum things up more when dry? But fingers crossed...

Well it is not just a teenage thing! If the rice thing doesn't work try to find somewhere locally that mends them. Near my mum's is a really nice shop dealing in repairs to computers, ipads etc. A certain 53 year teenager (cough cough) was holding her mac by the screen and managed to damage it. They repaired it and when I asked how common it was, told me they normally had damaged ipads and blackberries in. In fact the chap's wife continually damaged her ipad until he got her a ?rubber cover for it.

Obviously need to nag on and on about the need to be more careful. See it isn't just boys that are like this, my nice is obviously just like her auntie and is very clumsy. Mind you, my neice is worse because she dumps stuff in the bathroom (laptop, ipad et) and leaves it on seats where cats and people could sit on it unawares.

Maybe if she has a bit of pocket money she could help to paying what might be quite an expense towards the repair????

Obvious tips - turn it upside down so stuff can drain out... but you've probably done that already.

Apparently teenagers are more clumsy than adults because they are growing quickly, this quite is from bbc science...

Many teenagers shoot up so fast that their brains cannot keep up. As their height increases, their centre of gravity lifts. This happens so quickly that the brain does not get a chance to calculate the new rules for balancing. Clumsiness is often unavoidable.

You need to turn the power off straight away and not turn it back on for at least a couple of days. Try the rice - but to be honest coke is the worst thing to spill because the sugar leaves such a residue.

I understand why your mad but please don't be too hard on her.

My best friend has spent her while live being reprimanded and punished for being clumsy. She agonises about it and tries desperately to no keep breaking important things.

try not to be too hard on your DD, you say she is 'cackhanded' she might have a touch of dyspraxia or something - mu DD destroyed my good toshiba laptop with a sugary drink, but as the person who supplies me with second hand laptops pointed out, it was my fault for letting her near it with a drink when i know she is dsypraxic etc.

Yes, she should apologise and feel sad that she broke the iPad.

But you, as her parent, should have gone up to that room, explain that accidents happen and not let her break her heart crying. Explain that iPad is broken now, we are short on cash, and the cost-cutting steps we are going to have to take to fund the iPads fixing/replacement - if we can afford it at all.

I would never let her sit upstairs alone, crying out of fear of you and dad's reaction. So cruel.

It seems to be working, I cannot imagine how but it is!She was very quick to take the casing off and dry it .possibly she did not spill as much as she thought.Thank you everyone for your advice and Rosencrantz I didn't leave her crying, I did check on her and yes she felt guilty but the tears were more of the I won't be able to listen to my music type, what will I do now tears.I will agree I possibly didn't react in the best possible way.

Responsible use of an expensive family item would mean that drinks were kept well clear. That way, spills cannot happen.
Yes accidents happen, but you need to take care the reduce the likely hood of accidents happening.

The rice thing is a waste of time after a few hours, and is not effective when the liquid is coke. It has limited effect on water spills if it is dealt with immediately. Taking it apart and drying it out is the best move.

Thank you Mostwicked , your opening sentence is how I feel and what I have always said to both of mine.I think that is partly why I was so disappointed not least because it was coke and she has just started drinking that rubbish:>(

Well I'm not in London and my teenagers haven't trashed an iPad mainly as we can't afford one but I'd be very happy to look after one of yours for you PleaseMumCanIHaveIt if you've got that many lying around!
