would a student be sent home for self harming

So much depends on circumstances.

A child who is ill/distressed/in pain may well be better off going home.

The good thing is the school will be able to get the right help for the student.

If they were sent home, it wouldn't be in disgrace, it would be because it was the best thing for them.

I agree with other replies, a child wouldn't be sent home in punishment but maybe if they're in severe distress. My dd was handled very well at school and only missed 1 day through her own choice. The school can help you get a referral to your local CAMHs for counselling so work with them.
