ds is 14 and when he is bored he will hang about with a couple of boys that are about 10.
I don't like it as I think it is odd that he would want to.so I try to talk him out of it. I am not bothered if they are in a group (like earlier when there were other boys of ds'd age)
I always feel that other people will think ds is odd. or that if anything happens he will get the blame. what do you think

I suppose I would worry that ppl think the 14 year old is responsible for trouble etc.

But then again, I tend to think its better than hanging about with kids 4 years old, ie; 18.
Wonder what the 10 year olds' parents think?

my ds (13) hangs out with younger kids - he kinda gets away with is becuase
a) he's a prat
b) hes short and looks about 10

however if it were my older son ( more mature at that age - looks his age etc - i would be like you.
i do tell ds that he needs to get some other friends - but i get back " you wont let me off the street - you wont take me to my friends what am i supposed to do"
and well....he's right. i wont.

ds has other friends. but sometimes like today if they arn't arround he gets bored. also his "local" mates don't like skateboards and the youger kids do. I am probally worring about nothing. tbh he seems to bore of them very quickly

My 14 year old often hangs out with a group of children in the next street aged from 8 to 14. Sometimes she is the only 14 year old. All the parents are quite happy about this.

If it were my 14 year old I would encourage him to seek out mates of the same age but if they weren't getting up to mischief I wouldn't push it too much tbh. Chances are he will outgrow the younger mates soon anyway.

Mind you, if it were my 10 year old ds, I wouldn't encourage him to hang about with kids 4 years older than him. I would worry what influence they would have on him. But then my 10 yo ds is a prat most of the time so they wouldn't let him anyway.

Bit double standardish I know but that's how I'd feel.

i talked to dh about it and he reckons ti will blow over. most of the kids nearer his age are in to football and ds hates it. hopefully once the world cup is over he will go back to the group.
