I am thinking of comissioning some research into the correlation between teenage hormones and the sudden inability to place socks in the wash the correct way round.

Dd3 is nearly 11 and is just starting to show some signs of raised hormone levels and the first thing to change is the sock thing!!

Its wierd because she has Asd and is quite obsessive about this kind of thing. I was truely hoping that she would skip this phase.

The other 2 Dd's nearly drive me bonkers with thier washing and Dd2 has been doing her own since 14 Dd1 was 16 but I got wiser

I know in the big scheme of things socks (and other washing) are not really important but why do they have such a problem turning bloody socks round

A while back I realised that I was washing 70 socks a week....

Dh and Ds's now all have the same black socks and they come out of the wash the way they went in, ie. inside out and bunched up. There's no way I am putting my paws into their dirty socks ! When dried they all go into the same one drawer where they can go and sort their own pairs....

I got fed up with this too, so, like muchbighternow, I give them back the way they went in! I'm hoping (still) that they will get fed up of this and cop themselves on! If not, it's just not my problem! :)

Could you also include research into their little foibles around wearing odd socks? I don't just mean two mis-matched, but ultimately the same colour socks, I mean completely-bear-no-resemblance-to-each-other socks. This usually results in at least one parent having odd socks too as they nick your socks to mis-match theirs with.

DH has clearly never grown up, his skill in sock scattering far exceeds his DDs'

I just wash them as they are given to me (usually a scrunched up ball) and return them the same way. They can pair them up themselves or just pick out two random ones, it's up to them!

Be thankful you have daughters. You do NOT want to know what teenage boys do with socks.

My older Dd's wear odd socks but as I said Dd3 has Asd so I will be very surprised if she ever gets into that

I know it is really common and I also resorted to a box of mismathches with the older girls.

Thanks for this thread. I have asked dsd2 and 4 to not put scrunched socks in the wash and they still do. I normally discover them after I get them out of the washing machine.

From now on i will be returning them scrunched. I will also be returning the knickers still attached to inside outside jeans where dsd4 takes the whole lot off in one go.

DS1's socks seem to last about two weeks before they get massive holes in the heels. DH is the same. This doesn't happen to anyone else in the family. I hope it's not related to the comment Fenton made!

I am gob-smacked by how many of you still wash your teenagers' socks!! My boys have been doing their own clothes washing since they were about 10. There is just no way I would touch their socks! Do I win today's bad mother award?

Lol flow I put up with Dd1's horrid washing until she was 16, Dd2's until she was 14.

Dd3 is 10 at the moment and I think I will very soon be showing her how to use the washing machine.

I will give her another chance to sort her clothes out first though

My dd2 is only 11, but she has been leaving her socks inside out and scrunched up for YEARS

No issues with sorting for my teen dd though - she will only ever wear non matching socks.

Why the Fuck does anyone not do all the families washing together. I simply don't get how separating loads for colour, efficient use water, detergent, line space, tumble drying or anything else can possibly work with people doing their own washing.

If you let teen girls near the washer they would either wash one thing they wanted for tomorrow or have a massive clear out of their rooms and break the machine. The rows over who's turn it was to use the machine would be monumental.

Yes I can see the logic of please put your muddy sports kit/wet swimmers straight in the machine and set it going, but beyond that it just confuses me totally.

We have a rule that everyone does their own but the load must always be full, so if one of the DSes desperately wants a particular top or pair of jeans, they have to 'top up' with someone else's dirty washing. I do towels and usually do sheets tho they sometimes smuggle a set into the machine, presumably because they've been up to teen boy stuff! It works well enough for us, and means I generally do about 3 loads per week, not per day! They have been doing their own since about age 11 - so 7 years - and haven't broken the machine yet!

DD1 would wait until the heap reached the ceiling.

DD2 would wash things she had worn for 5 minutes

Dh would wash on load a month if we were lucky.

It would not work.

It wouldn't work here either.

Ds1 would wash nothing Ever.

Dd would wash one item at a time as and when she wanted to wear it.
She would use the longest cycle for 1 item.

The arguments would also be insane.

We have enough arguments now, as they have to wash their sports kit as soon as they get in but won't put it in the same wash and both want it at the same time and ........

I would cry

I just stick everyones washing in together.
