dealing with DS1 and pain of his new braces

Had them on yesterday and in spite of painkillers sobbed 1/2 the night with the pain.

Hes struggling to eat with them and getting very upset and wants them of.

any suggestions..paracetamol and soup being supplied..as well as cuddles and saying they will settle down.

What's the pain from? Are they rubbing anywhere?

Maybe call the ortho for more advice.... I've 3 teens who all had them. Bit of discomfort is normal and will settle

Dd just went thro this. Ice cubes, ice lollies, diet lemonade . It eases after a few days, ibuprofen.

Oh dear, I can totally sympathise! My DD got hers fitted a couple of months ago and was exactly the same. It was awful. Her teeth weren't actually that bad and I was so tempted to just get them taken off she was in so much pain. I gave her both paracetamol and ibuprofen at the start, and she lived on mashed potato, chocolate mousse, weetabix and ice cream. The first few days are very sore, but the pain should all be gone by the first week. DD had her first tightening last week and it was a bit sore for the rest of the day, but nothing like getting them fitted.

They really will feel so much better in a couple of days. Both of my DCs had them- one still has- and improvement in comfort is rapid.

Day 1 had DD cutting a sandwich into tiny cubes to eat and by day 3/4 she was fine.
DS is on the autistic spectrum and has quite a low pain threshold. His first 24 hours with the removable braces (big blocks in to move the lower jaw forward) had him crying and gagging. Within 2 days he was managing well. 2.5 years later, the fixed braces will soon be off and his teeth look fab Smile

Keep on hugging/soup/reassuring. It DOES get better and it will be worth it.

poor thing, hes texting me from school saying they really hurt.

I have sent him with painkillers to take but hes struggling to eat.

DD1 had braces fitted recently. She was shocked by the pain. Not known for having a high pain threshold anyway and often teased by her sibs. Now settled down. Took a week though. Soft food, v cold drinks and paracetamol and I ibuprofen. She didn't use the wax she was given. She was utterly determined and is now pleased. It will be worth it. Hang in there!

I remember having mine fitted the pain is horrid , any cold and alot of bonjela on the inside of his lips will help with the rubbing till the skin gets use to it ! Does only last about a week so will get better
