DD not on team for school team nationals & devasted

Does anyone have any advice as to how to deal with a child who has been selected for a school team for the last three years and has been dropped before the national championship? She is, unsurprisingly, devastated and doesn't want to go to school tomorrow as she says it will be so embarrassing. She is a non-travelling sub & the sports teacher has asked her to wear her kit in case anyone selected is unwell.

I have a sports mad DD. Only 11yo, but I feel your pain. Not sure I understand the non-traveling sub, she can't be selected for sure or is it still a maybe if someone is ill.

Could her coach talk to her this evening, not too late?

Perhaps point out to her that it would be even more embarrassing if she doesn't turn up for school tomorrow. Like she's a big girl's blouse having a strop coz she resents the others for getting on the team. That's how the others might take it. But instead if she can see them off with a cheer which will make her look like a fantastic sport, setting the right example of how to take a setback. Any friends who can comfort her around the time the team will be leaving without her?

Also a chance to turn all her frustrations into resolve to train harder to be sure to get into the team next year.

Could she wear her usual school uniform and take kit just in case. That way she won't spend all day at school feeling embarrassed (although if course she shouldn't but you know what I mean!).

Thank you for responding. I've done all the sensible things, suggested camps/courses she can attend in the summer holidays etc. non-traveling sub means there are other subs who go to the matches but if anyone is ill she goes in their place. She was unsporty at primary school and getting into a team has been a major achievement - I don't want to out her, but think beating physical challenges etc.

I've emailed her tutor & asked her to keep an eye out for her tomorrow - I have also asked her not to say anything to DD. I've also spoken to one of DD's friend's mothers and asked her to ask her daughter to keep an eye out.

We've just had more tears after she'd been in bed a while.

Oh your poor DD. I can understand how upset she is. Unfotunately it is one of life's hard lessons.

Another update - she is playing after all, someone must have dropped out.

That's good - at least she can get the chance to prove herself.

This happened to my DD as she had been off sick and missed a lot of matches and her position was taken by another girl. She managed to get her place back when the team was losing and the coach had no choice but to make changes, giving my DD the opportunity to show her skills, and she played a blinder - hope your DD enjoys the games.
