part time jobs... would a care home take on an unskilled teen?

DS is desperate for a part time job.

He's 17 and doing A levels/hospital volunteering, hoping for a medical career.

Would care homes take on a teen and train them to do odd shifts/holiday work? It seems the best option all round to earn money and get experience but I'm not sure they'd do it.

Is it worth him asking and anywhere else that might be worth applying?

Yes, 18 year old friend of DD did this, started off as unskilled labour, paid minimum wage and then ended up doing a similar thing through uni at a larger salary.
No harm in trying, he'd probably need a CRB check too.

He already holds a CRB check ( for the hospital work) though of course that isn't transferable (yet). I'll get him to put a CV together and pop it round some homes- there are plenty locally. Thanks!

Definitely! They may want him to wait until he's 18 but if he can get references from the hospital voluntary work that should stand him in good stead.

I worked during all my holidays in local care homes when I came home from uni which was great for them as I could cover the times other people wanted holidays, and they didn't have to pay agency rates. He will also gain lots- working with people and developing a better beside manner and confidence, which is often missing with junior medics!!

It certainly used to be the case - I worked as a nursing assistant from 18 in elderly care during my holidays, and it was invaluable experience. There were a number of holiday only NAs where I worked as it meant permanent staff could have school holidays off.
