How many shoes shall I budget from walking age to 3 years old?

Hello,

I m soon to be a new mom and looking a bit at everything, including shoes. I d be interested to know how many shoes do I expect my DD to get from walking age (18mo?) to 3 years old? I mean, how many sizes will she need to go through? Is it like 5 per season or 5 per year or 10 per year?

Just trying to "budget in the long term" and get an idea of what I d expect ...

One every 4 months or so. In my experience.

Well my DS began walking about six weeks ago and has already had shoes in three different sizes. We started in 3. Then 3.5. Now 4... Can only hope this rate of growth slackens off soon!

why is this in teenagers btw?

Of course it all depends on how often you get their feet checked...

I seriously wouldn't think about this yet. Both my dc walked at 10 months - by the time ds was 3 he'd been through sizes 5-13 whereas dd is 2 1/2 now and atarted in a 6 and is now only in a 7.

DS has gone from size 3.5 at 12 months to size 7.5 at 2.5 years - so I guess that's a new size/pair of shoes every 2-3 months so far. Plus of course as well as his main pair of shoes you'll need wellies, and we've bough sandals for summer and snow boots too.

a new pair every 8-12 weeks here. but only one pair at a time except for wellies and sandals/reef shoes.

My ds wore about 8 pairs but my dd only went through 4-5 pairs.

As well as a pair of shoes, you might need Wellies which you keep having to replace as well.

OK. so in essence we re talking 8 - 12 pairs over 2/3 years and maybe a little extra for wellies and sandals.

For wellies and sandals, any brand in particular or any is good?

My children are not teenagers yet. They have fairly slow growing feet, ds school shoes tend to last all year, then a pair of wellies and sandals, I find next good for both of these. Dd is younger so I reckon she needs 2 pairs of shoes a year plus wellies and sandals. But I think their sandals from last year will fit this year too as they were half a size too big. Who knows if your child will have big feet and walk early etc? Dd walked at 10 months and had feet so tiny there were no shoes made for her!

Both my dc have slow growing feet. DS has been walking for two years and is only on his third pair of fitted shoes and DD is 18 months, been walking since 10 months and is still on her first pair! It's not that I don't take them to get them checked, I only went a couple of weeks ago so they definitely still fit
It could all change as well though, they could both suddenly have growth spurts and go through a couple of sizes in a couple of months!
Plus you have to think about extras, wellies, snow boots and sandals.

Dd had one pair of shoes at each size:4,5,6,7.
Also 2 pairs of wellies probably size:4,6
Also sandals probably size:5,7

All of which came from ebay or car boot sales for about £1 to £4 each.

Like Loughrigg, I was going to say you pick up wellies and sandals from 'hand me downs' - whether that's friends or charity shops or Freecycle, it doesn't matter, but you don't need to spend a lot.
Shoes, it is more important to get fitted, but it's difficult to predict. Some walk at 10months, others don't walk until nearly 2 yrs, then they all seems to grow in fits and starts (and this continues until they stop growing at about 21 ), but the good thing is when they are little, they only need 1 pair of shoes at a time. It's teens that get expensive!

For my ds, a pair of shoes each year plus sandals in the summer. So first shoes at 11mo, which was end August, then sandals following May, new.shoes Sept, repeat. And a.couple pairs of 2nd hand wellies which went unworn, and some second hand shoes a size up in case of need - only worn when shoes were mislaid.

Handily, dd is now wearing the first shoes, but none of the others survived to hand down even if she happened to be the right size.
