rent from 19 year old DD

i was just wondering if peoples adult DC pay rent or money towards food/bills.
How much would you suggest asking DD to contribute, bearing in mind she is working full time-earning around 12k?

Why don't you work out what % of your earnings go on food and bills and ask her to contribute the same % of her wages. Seems the best way to me

My DD earns £16k and gives me £300 per month via a standing order.

Mines at uni but living at home . Earns about £700 per month at his part time job and we don't take anything but I do know that he saves a good amount . If I thought he was spending it all I'd take some and save it for him.

Would you be renting out the room to a lodger if DC were not there? If the answer to that is No then I guess you would just need money to cover their food and electricity. Maybe you could just ask that they do the grocery shop every third or fourth shop or ask for a set weekly amount to cover that.

I assume DC is living with you because they can't afford their own place (I'm thinking there aren't that many adults who would want to live with their parents!) so charging rent if you don't need it to survive is just prolonging that for both of you.

Maybe you could try to ensure DC saves a certain amount each month for a deposit on a home but if you think they spend unnecessarily you could maybe ask for rent to save for them. Although that's a bit patronizing where it's another adult...

19yo DD, she earns just a bit less than £10k a year and her keep is £200pm.
That wouldn't even cover the rent for a 1 bed run-down flat, so I think that's very fair tbh.

I paid Mum and Dad at aged 16. £50 per week I was earning around £8,500.00 back in the olden days....

I paid my parents £300 a month on a salary of £17k. When I bought a house they gave me the whole lot back to go towards the deposit. It was a very nice surprise
