Periods - how old were your dds?

How old were your dds when they started their periods? And can you tell me what other signs (if any) they had beforehand?

My dd is 11 in March and has started developing breasts, has greasy hair, body odour and a few spots. Just wondering whether it's likely to happen soon or whether they still might be a while off.

DD1 at 12 1/2 and she started developing at 8 and was very curvy from about 10. Had one period then next in six months and erratic for about another year. DD2 at 10 skinny as a rake. Next period a couple of months later then regular. The one commonality was that for about six months before they both got unexplained abdominal phantom period pains a couple of times.
I'd spoken to them both and they carried a period kit in the bottom of their school bag. Pads and a spare pair of knickers. DD1 had a day off school as she was a bit upset and started overnight. DD2 just helped herself to DD1's pads and only thought it was worth mentioning when they were running low!

  1. No physical clues, but a bit hormonal in behaviour!

Mine were both 12. They'd started needing anti-perspirant, as opposed to just using it, and had started to become curvy. I can't put my finger on it, but could just tell that it wouldn't be long each time, and I was right.

They both carried pads and spare knickers in their school bags from the start if year 7

Some of the girls in their peer group started in year 6 though.

DD was just turned 12. She had started developing breasts at 10 and getting hairy about 11. She had/has a little purse in her school bag with pads in from about halfway through Y6!

Some of her friends started in Y5, some of her friends are 14 and haven't started yet.

DD1 was about 13, but DD2 is 14 and no sign of anything yet, not even greasy hair.

DSD1 was 13. She'd had noticeable breasts for about a year. DSD2 was almost 15 when she started, and she developed everything late. She's only 16 now and feels new to it because all her friends started in Year 6-8.

Strangely both Dds were 11yrs 3 months.

Started developing at 9 but took 3 years to start periods. There isn't a norm, everyone is different although I'd say if she hasn't started by the time she's 15, take her to the doctor.

I never thought to put a pack in dd's bag. What pads do you get your dds? Dd1 is 11, spotty, smelly and greasy so could happen anytime.

We've had the chat but equipmentwise I am so unprepared as I have a mirena and use a mooncup for my very light periods...

StressedoutMotherofTeens · 13/12/2012 22:03

I started to pack pads from the age of 11 as many of dd's friends had started. Mine didn't until 13. Skinny as a rake no greasy hair or spots then one day boom!! I got her Always pads to start. But sometimes they talk to their friends and use the same as them. Some quite sporty so use Lillets but it's a personal choice I think.
Hope this helps!

My DD has been asking when that'll happen. She's only 9 but just started (to her great delight!) to sprout breast buds. I did some googling and apparently the average length of time between first signs of breasts and periods is 2.5 years - though as it seems from what people have said here, that's only an average, so can be quite different.
