My poor ds saved so hard to buy one, had it for 5 months, knocked it accidently off the table tonight and its broken. Feel so sorry for him, would it be too expensive to repair?

I don't think they are very expensive to repair. Try taking it to a small independent phone shop - they do things like that there.

BertieBotts · 05/07/2012 23:31

This is comparative to the cost of replacing, anyway.

HairyPotter · 05/07/2012 23:39

Apple replaced dd's with a brand new one for £75. I made an appointment with genius bar expecting them to send it away to be repaired. If you do go through apple, make sure you have everything backed up before you go as they have to wipe the old one due to copyright I think.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 05/07/2012 23:42

DH has fixed a couple of these by following tutorials on Youtube. Was quite fiendish and the on/off button was weirdly concave afterwards (more than it had been before). I'd go for the Apple option myself.

tabulahrasa · 05/07/2012 23:42

If you phone apple they'll swap it for a new one for about half the price...if you take it to an apple store to do that, they might just give you a new one and not charge you for it.

They did with me and I've heard of other people having had the same thing, but it seems to depend on the mood of the person at the genius bar.

Thank you..............whats the genius bar mean? We are having such a rotten time, my dh has advanced cancer and my lovely Mum died in hosp last Tues :(

It's what they call the help desk in an apple store.

My DD dropped hers on my front doorstep - I went expecting to pay and I told him what she'd done, he said, well accidental damage isn't covered by the warranty, but it shouldn't have cracked like that, here have a new one.

I had looked into getting it fixed and there were places online that said they would do it for £50, but I thought I was better taking it to apple because even though it would cost more the new one would still have a warranty.

Sorry to hear about your mum and DH :(

Sleepydog · 06/07/2012 09:24

We went to an independent repair shop for ours - £50 . It can be done and cheaper than an new I pod.

tabulahrasa · 06/07/2012 09:28

The new iPod I was going to get wasn't full price, someone else said £75? I remember it being a really random number like £79, or £84... But I can't remember because when I took it to apple, as I said they didn't charge me anything.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 06/07/2012 11:48

Do you think it's worth taking a phone to apple then? DD knocked hers off the table and it's got 150 cracks in it - DH found someone who'll fix it for about £75 but I didn't even think of taking it to an apple store they scare me.

tabulahrasa · 06/07/2012 13:06

I would, if they want to charge you for it and it's too much you can always say no... But I figure it's worth a shot?

twentyten · 07/07/2012 19:18

You poor things-what a tough time.I got my cracked Iphone screen fixed at a small stall in our local shopping centre-do you have a market? Cost £40.Did it there and then-it was fine.

misstrunchball · 07/07/2012 21:58

Try www.studentcomputers.co.uk/ They will repair it for about £69.00. Very good they are to.

Fairyliz · 08/07/2012 16:50

My daughter did this after 11 months and 30 days went to the apple store and was given a brand new one free of charge! The man behind the counter said good job it came in today the next day would have been too late.

1066cb · 09/07/2012 09:44

Guessing v sad teen. My mum won an Ipod and my son was made up when he got it given. He was so so careful but he dropped it and the screen broke. again it worked for a while but gave up eventually, we never got it repaired becase of cost concerns. B D and Christmas and paper round money ment he could buy himself one. Luckily we got insrance as an extra because it was knoked from his hand in week one. INS replaced back and glass, like new but it happened again..Not yet repaired as EVERYTHING GETS WIPED OFF IT when it gets fixed BE AWARE! Why aren't there any case yet that will protect the screen??? Good luck, my son won't have it fixed now because he'll loose photos.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/07/2012 13:55

1066, can't he copy the photos onto a pc? I have a mac so it's easy to sync the two, but I'm sure it must possible to do it with any computer? < pc illiterate >

TheWoollybacksWife · 09/07/2012 14:04

Sorry to hear that you are having a rough time of it.

A long shot maybe, but do you still have the receipt/proof of purchse?

DD2 cracked the screen on her ipod touch when she'd had it for 11 months. I still had the proof of purchase and took it back to the shop where they replaced it free of charge under the apple 1 year guarantee.

More details here

If you bought it from somewhere like Asda or Tesco Direct they should be able to send you a copy of your proof of purchase.

triplets · 09/07/2012 14:18

Hi.........no idea where the reciept is, but have e-mailed the comp we bought it from via Amazon, no reply as yet. Everything is going wrong atm:(

tabulahrasa · 09/07/2012 17:24

I didn't have the receipt and I hadn't bought it from apple btw

LollipopViolet · 11/07/2012 19:21

Take it to Apple.

My friend got her iPhone screen replaced at an independent place, and it made the problem worse, something happened to the insides of the phone during the process.

I'd always try Apple first, they've been very good in the past with other friends.
