Is DS18 eligible for benefits?

DS 18 has finished his A levels so is at home doing not much - talks vaguely of getting a job and I've directed him towards the job centre etc.

Is he entitled to claim any benefits? He eats and eats and eats but stays slim and gorgeous, and is costing me a fortune. I didn't mind whilst he was studying, but now he's just idling I think he should be bringing some money into the house. Me and DH both work so don't know too much about the benefits system.

Surely it would be better to direct him towards paid employment - at least try and get a job rather than 'talk vaguely about it'. Hmm

Yes to getting a job, or at least going down to the job centre, and in the meantime he should be earning his keep at home.
Mine hasn't finished college yet, but he washes up, cleans, gardens and does some light shopping for basics.

Has he tried askiing around for 'odd jobs' ie: car washing/lawn mowing etc. i would love to have a local teenager to do that sort of thing Grin. As an absolute minimum he shoud be pulling his weight at home.

He is entitled to jobseekers

Viviennemary · 03/07/2012 11:59

Are you still getting child benefit for him? And is he planning to go to Uni or do a full time course.

usualsuspect · 03/07/2012 12:01

Hes not entitled to jobseekers allowance if he is going to university or if you are still receiving child benefit for him

Tressy · 03/07/2012 12:05

If he going to Uni, then child benefit ends at the end of August and he will be financed by student finance after that so he is not entitled to Job Seekers. AFAIK

No. Assuming he's going on to some sort of further education, then students claiming dole during the holidays was stopped decades ago.

If he's not going on to study then I guess he's entitled to Job Seekers (if he is seeking a job).
