Ds prom wear

Will ds be ok to wear a vintage dinner jacket with a white dress shirt, undone tie your own bow tie, black nearly skinny jeans and vintage black patent dinner shoes? Or will he look a complete knob idiot? Neither he or I have any idea. He will be going by himself . Its a a very posh flashy 5* hotel.

He probably will look a bit silly. Is this a fashion statement or a financial consideration?

Hmmm its not necessarily financial although he is still growing and if I get him a suit he probably wont get to wear it for more than this occassion. In his mind he is happy to wear this (GQ reader) but I do agree being very different from others requires a huge amount of self confidence.

So next choice then where is best for a cheap suit as I presume thats the alternative?

Have you looked in to renting?

There are usually some pretty crazy outfits at proms so I suppose he might scrape by but considering that a lot of the other kids will be going to a some effort for the night it might be polite for him to wear something a bit more formal than jeans.

I think his outfit sounds fine actually. My DDs would probably think he was great ! It does depend on him being confident to carry it off though. Dd1 hired her prom dress and the shop had suits for hire too, so good and safe alternative.

We are buying DS a decent suit for the prom.
It can then be worn for interviews that will be taking place shortly after!!

He can have a jazzy shirt or tie if he wants so he looks like a 15 year old having fun rather than a lad who is about to clock on at the office!!

He's already sorted which one he wants. He just wants my debit card now!!

Primark for cheap boy-man DJ suits.

THe cheapness of the cut means they fit slender teen types and they are /were sold as separates so if the trousers aren't right you can select a reasonably matching pair from their general means stuff.

DS has had a DJ jacket from there since he was 14 (he's now 16 and it just fits, having been bought big LOL) that he has worn with a new pair of black school trousers in a succession of sizes for singing in concerts 4-5x a year.

What I do with shoes and trousers is that he has a "posh" and a "school" pair- they are not different just the "posh" are the new ones and when the school ones die or are outgrown then he rotates them and I buy a new "posh" pair.

Resisting buying DS and ordinary suit until the very last minute. Strangely (certainly from primark) the DJs are cheap really - I suspect a DJ is worn so little that the crapness of it's manufacture doesn't matter!

Your DS's outfit sounds great to me.
I think that by 16 many of them are glad to look different from the crowd.

I disagree about renting. For my father's funeral I ended up buying both boys a suit from BHS as renting was way more expensive for a plain dark suit.

I had hoped to get away with buying DS a classic dinner jacket/trousers or a black suit and dress shirt, I'm pretty sure he won't grow much more and it would have come in useful.

Anyway the girls had other ideas and the girls rule the prom. DS is going with his ex girlfriend. They were together 2 years and parted friends. DS and his friend were under orders persuaded to go shopping with the girls they are partnering to make sure they approved of the suit . He has ended up with this which looks fab with his hair parted sideways 20s style.

upahill - off topic a bit but in an effort to teach DS1 a bit about money management etc I organised a teen bank account for him. He can manage it online and it includes a debit card. I moved enough into his account to cover the suit so he could pay himself using the debit card and didn't need to have his mother tag along.

There are some lovely suits in Next at quite reasonable prices. If you get a classic style it can be used again. Did think about renting but it seems a bit expensive. Apparently his date has to come too though to approve and chose the accessories so that the colour matches her dress! God help us.

DS gets a lot of money each week. He get's £20 pocket money and earns between £40 and £60 depending how much he has helped out in his part time job.

We have a deal. All the money from the part time job goes into a saving account. The minute he starts spending it on other things the pocket money stops there and then. He has managed to save quite a some and doesn't always spend his full amount of pocket money and buys himself something decent every few weeks or so.

I am more than happy to pay for the suit and have given him a budget of £200 max as I feel we will get good use from it (we have several large family meals coming up where it is smart wear, then his interviews and so on.)

I got my DS a lovely suit from TopMan. They do a slim fit which is great for teenagers where they have shot up in height but not yet filled out.

However, I think your DS should wear what he wants. If I remember correctly, there were a lot of lads who went with quite individual styles as they wanted to stand out from the crowd.

Thanks, am googling at the mo (we live overseas hence the early start for getting organised) to see the cost. We do also have a hire place (allegedly) so will try and hunt that out and see what they offer. Will also get DS to see what the girls think about his idea.

I sympathise - ds1 wants to wear this! But he has individual taste. I have no idea where he is going to get the money from anyway. given that we're probably talking £300 for the waistcoat, trousers, shirt and shoes.

Does anyone want to buy him?
