My DD has started at high school - she invited a new freind round last week but unlike old friends they just didnt know what to do with each other and ended up just going on each others phones...which is not something my dd normally does - they seemed at a loss.Maybe it was just a fitting in thing. I didnt want to interfere!! but i wonder if i should try and maybe think of activieties, in a subtle way ,that new friends can do together like make a pizza and top it together- any ideas please..

Cinema? Swimming?

It's easier with boys because they'll happily go on the ps3 for hours on end with not a huge amount of talking but still kind of bonding.

My dd (13) and friends make cakes, go on the trampoline in the garden, sit about in the garden sucking homemade ice lollies and chatting, play badminton and bowls, watch films/t.v./on the Wii together while chatting, have make-up/hair-do sessions, play charades, play with her pets, general chatting, lots of chatting in fact - in-jokes from school etc...

Perhaps brain-storm ahead of time with your dd so she has some activities up her sleeve to suggest "spontaneously". It's difficult with a new friend anyway cos they're still getting to know each other without a lot of shared history. Will probably get easier.

my ds is 14 when her mates just come round they usually watch a rom com and have popcorn chat with mates on msn on the laptop and bounce on the trampoline sometimes walk to the park when there sleeping over i get a rom com for them and a load of diff flavour drinks (to make soft drink cocktails) dorito's and dips popcorn they play pool as we have a table in the summer weve a large heated pool they splash around in and do facepacks nails ect try clothes on and go to the mall together. but i get some things in and they know there there so i leave em to it, there past baking now (my dd would do that if was just us both at home she loves it but never wants to do this sort of activity with mates round) but does ask to sleep in the familyroom so they can watch movies till late or sleep in the tent in the garden
